Wisconsin Debuts at No. 3 in Preseason Poll

October 5, 2004

MADISON, Wis.—For the first time in school history the Wisconsin women’s hockey team debuted at No. 3 in the USCHO.com preseason standings. The Badgers weighed in the third slot behind 2003 National Champions Minnesota and powerhouse Dartmouth. Last season the Badger compiled a program-best 25-6-3 record but never broke the top three.

Hockey’s other ranking body, USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine’s preseason poll listed Wisconsin at five, where they finished in the 2003-04 final ranking. Beating them out in the second poll was Harvard and St. Lawrence. The schools finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the USCHO.com poll.

USCHO.com also singled out this year’s preseason All-USCHO First, Second, Third and Rookie Teams. Wisconsin got three nods on three teams. U.S. national team member Molly Engstrom was named to the seven member first team. Captain Carla MacLeod was listed among the second teamers and junior goaltender Meghan Horras rounded out the group with a nod on the honorable mention roster.

Wisconsin takes to the ice Friday and Saturday this week for its 2004-05 opening series against Wayne State. The Warriors and Badgers met just once before in the first season of Wisconsin women’s hockey. The 5-0 blow out on Oct. 23, 1999 was WSU’s first-ever home game and the teams have not met since.

Below are the most recent polls and All-USCHO teams.
