Wisconsin To Be Represented in Four Seasons Cup

Oct. 1, 2004

MADISON, Wis.-Senior assistant captain Molly Engstrom was one of 15 women named to the U.S. National Team by USA Hockey Thursday. The first competition for the squad will be defending the gold in the 2004 Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., Nov. 10-14.

The U.S. will play host to the tournament for the third time in history, welcoming Finland, Canada and Sweden.

Engstrom is joined by nine Olympians and five current WCHA players. In addition to representing the University, the Siren, Wis. native is the only Wisconsinite named to the roster.

Engstrom returns to the Badgers in the 2004-05 season having finished her junior term playing in all 34 games, registering five goals, 19 assists (5-19=24) and +29 on the season. She was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year as well as receiving WCHA Conference honors, being named to the 2004 Final Five All-Tournament team and ranking third in the conference for overall defensive scoring.

During the international competition Engstrom is likely to see a familiar face. Canadian-born UW teammate Carla MacLeod was invited to compete on one of two Canadian teams in the Thanksgiving Festival, Oct. 6-10 in Kitchener, Ontario. The event hosts teams from Russia and Sweden, but will also serve as a development and evaluation opportunity while Team Canada assembles its 2005 World Championship and 2006 Olympic rosters.

MacLeod’s performance in these games could earn her a position on the roster and a chance to face off against teammate Engstrom at the Four Nations Cup in November. MacLeod also participated in the 2003 Four Nations Cup.

Because of the competition dates, MacLeod will be absent from the Badger line during the first home series vs. Wayne State, Oct. 8-9. If she is invited to skate with Team Canada in the Four Nations Cup, neither she nor Engstrom will miss any NCAA competition, as they will meet up with their national teams during a bye week in the UW’s schedule.

Warming up for the regular season, the Badgers will compete in a Cardinal/White scrimmage Friday night at the Kohl Center. The match-up will give the Badgers an opportunity to get on the ice and gear up for Wayne State and the rest of the season. Stay tuned to uwbadgers.com for the latest on Badger women’s hockey.

Below are the competition schedules and links to rosters.
