>
> Keady, Wendell Score Twice In 6-1 Win Over Finland
>
> LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Newcomer Liz Keady (Braintree, Mass.) scored two goals
including the game-winner and University of Minnesota standout Krissy
Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) tallied twice as the U.S. Women's Select Team
earned a 6-1 win over Finland in the opening game of the 2004 Four Nations
Cup on Wednesday. The team will continue its defense of its 2003 gold medal
tonight, traveling to Burlington, Vt. to take on rival Canada in preliminary
action.
>
> The U.S. took an early lead and never looked back in the contest, in which
the red, white and blue enjoyed a 44-14 scoring advantage. Off to a 2-0 lead
in the first period, the U.S. allowed just one goal, early in the second,
before notching four unanswered tallies to wrap the win.
>
> Team Finland came within one in the middle stanza when forward Sari Fisk
sent a power-play slapshot under the left pad of U.S. goalie Pam Dreyer
(Eagle River, Alaska). Later in the period, Andrea Kilbourne (Saranac Lake,
N.Y.) would reclaim the two-goal cushion, firing a shot through the legs of
Finland's Heidi Wiik for 3-1, USA. With under a minute remaining, Wendell
took a quick pass from Jenny Potter (Eagan, Minn.) and put it on net from
the point for the 4-1 lead.
>
> The U.S. continued its scoring drive in the final period, with Wendell
notching her second of the night early in the third. Keady gave the U.S. its
final insurance, scoring with seconds left to play.
>
> The game opened with end-to-end hockey for the first 12 minutes of
tournament play before Potter broke onto the scoreboard with a nifty
wraparound shot, beating Wiik at 8:03 of the first stanza. Keady would score
the eventual game-winner with her first of the night, knocking in a Gretchen
Anderson (Natick, Mass.) rebound. The goal was the first at the senior level
for Keady who donned the USA crest in the Under-22 series against Canada in
August.
