BADGERS EARN 11 WCHA AWARDS AT LEAGUE BANQUET

MINNEAPOLIS * Wisconsin was well-represented at the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's annual women's banquet Friday night as the Badgers garnered 11 of 25 league awards, in addition to six academic honors.

The WCHA named Wisconsin junior Molly Engstrom (Siren, Wis.) as its Defensive Player of the Year and frosh Sara Bauer (St. Catherines, Ontario) as the Rookie of the Year.

Engstrom ranked fourth among league defenders in scoring with 15 points. She also ranked among the top 20 in scoring and tied for 10th with 13 assists. Engstrom, who ranks among the team scoring leaders, finished the season with a +20 rating and led the team in blocked shots. She also helped the Badgers rank as the top defensive team in the league, allowing opponents just 1.42 goals per game.

Bauer, ranked 10th in the league in scoring with 21 points and led all freshmen in scoring with 21 points. She tied for seventh with 15 assists while leading her team in goals and points in WCHA games with 21 and in points in overall games with 31.

Sophomore goaltender Meghan Horras was also named the league's Goaltending Champion to cap the Badgers' individual honors. She led the league with a 1.23 goals against average and posted an 8-3-1 record and a .941 save percentage.

Bauer led her teammates with three awards after being named to both the All-Rookie Team and the All-WCHA Second Team, in addition to her Rookie of the Year Honors.

Joining Bauer, frosh defender Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) and frosh goaltender Christine Dufour (Rivière-du-Loup, Québec) were also named to the All-Rookie Team.

Horras joined Bauer on the All-WCHA Second Team, in addition to senior forward Karen Rickard (Bowmanville, Ontario) and junior defender Carla MacLeod (Calgary, Alberta).

Engstrom represented Wisconsin as the only Badger on the All-WCHA First Team.

This season's awards mark the first league honors for all seven Badgers, in addition to the most honors that the team has earned in one season.

In addition to the Badgers' competitive awards, six Wisconsin skaters * Nikki Burish, Sharon Cole, Kathryn Greaves, Steph Millar, Nicole Uliasz and Amy Vermeulen * were selected to the All-WCHA Academic Team.

Wisconsin begins its run at the 2004 WCHA Final Five Championship Saturday against Minnesota-Duluth. The second-seeded Badgers drop the puck against the third-seeded Bulldogs at 1:05 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena.
