MIKKELSON EARNS WCHA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONORS

MADISON, Wis. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association selected Wisconsin women's hockey frosh Meaghan Mikkelson as the league's Rookie of the Week for March 7-14.

Her second weekly honor this season, Mikkelson tallied an assist in Wisconsin's 6-0 shutout against Bemidji this past Saturday, followed by the game-winning goal in the Badgers' 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center.

The sweep of the visiting Beavers gave the Badgers the program's best-ever winning mark in both overall and league victories in one season. Wisconsin wrapped the regular season with a 24-5-3 overall record and 18-5-1 record in WCHA action.

Mikkelson, a frosh hailing from St. Albert, Alberta, has turned into one of Wisconsin's utility skaters this season. One of the Badgers top first-year players this season, she has tallied seven goals and six assists for 13 points. Primarily a forward, she has stepped in for her teammates on defense for several games as well as showing versatility playing both center and wing.

Additionally, Mikkelson represented her home country as a member of Canada's Under-22 National Women's Team during a three-game series against the U.S. in July and more recently at the 2004 European Air Canada Cup in Germany.

Mikkelson and the Badgers travel to Minnesota's Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn., this weekend for the 2004 WCHA Women's Final Five.

No. 2 seed Wisconsin plays No. 3 seed Minnesota-Duluth Saturday at 1:05 p.m. in the WCHA semifinals. The winner of this game will advance to the WCHA Championship Game on Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
