Mankato, Minn.-- The Western Collegiate Hockey Association offices announced today that Minnesota State senior goaltender Shari Vogt (Richmond, Minn.) has earned her fourth WCHA Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season following a pair of road wins over Connecticut. The seventh such honor of her career, it brings the team total to six this season.
Vogt backstopped the Mavericks to 5-2 and 4-0 wins over the Huskies, extending the team's unbeaten streak to six games. On Friday, she made 34 saves on 36 shots faced, including 16 in the third period alone, and held UConn to just 1-of-7 on the power-play. She followed that up with a flawless performance on Saturday, earning her first shutout of the season with 30 saves. Vogt was a key factor in denying the hosts on six power-play opportunities.
With her performance over the weekend, Vogt added to her already impressive season totals. With her 11th win of the season, she matched her total from the previous three seasons. She also lowered her goals against average to 1.98 and reclaimed her spot atop the conference charts with a .941 save percentage. Vogt is looking to improve upon her team-record .918 save percentage set last season and has her sights set on the GAA mark, set by Melissa Jackson in 1998-99 at 2.78.
The Mavericks, 12-4-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the WCHA, continue road action with a conference set against Ohio State on Jan. 16-17. Game times in Columbus, Ohio, are set for 7:05 and 4:05 p.m., respectively. On Sunday, MSU will also take on non-conference opponent Findlay at 4:05 p.m.
