HORRAS NAMED WCHA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MADISON, Wis. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association selected Wisconsin women’s hockey goaltender Meghan Horras the league’s Defensive Player of the Week for Feb. 16-Feb. 22.

Horras collected 56 saves in helping leading then fourth-ranked Wisconsin to a series split with then second-ranked Minnesota at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis last weekend. Tied entering the series, the Badgers and Golden Gophers remained deadlocked for first-place in the WCHA standings with 29 points each after the two-game battle.

Friday evening, the UW sophomore stopped 20 of 21 shots from the Gophers to ensure Wisconsin’s 2-1 overtime victory. Despite Saturday’s close 2-1 loss, Horras turned in an impressive 36-save performance including a shutout of two Minnesota power plays.

The Appleton, Wis., native recorded a .949 save percentage and 1.47 goals-against average during the series and continues to lead the nation’s Division I women’s goaltenders with a 1.23 goals-against average in overall competition. In comparison, the nation’s top D-I men’s goaltender, Maine’s Jim Howard, has compiled a 1.31 GAA this season.

This marks Horras’ second weekly league honor of the season in her first year earning starting time in the Badger net. She and the fifth-ranked Badgers return home to the Kohl Center this weekend to play Niagara in a non-conference series. The puck drops against the Purple Eagles at 2:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
