ENGSTROM SELECTED TO U.S. NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey named Wisconsin women’s hockey defender Molly Engstrom to its 20-player roster for the 2004 U.S. National Women’s Team Wednesday.

Engstrom, a UW junior from Siren, Wis., and Team USA will compete at the 2004 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Championship, March 30-April 6, in Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The nine-nation tournament features the world’s top female ice hockey players.

Over winter brink, Engstrom attended the 2004 U.S. women’s National Team Training Camp at the Colorado Springs World Arena. The camp served as the final selection process in identifying the newly-announced National Team.

“Based on performances at the Four Nations Cup and the Colorado Springs camp in December, I feel that we’ve been able to assess our player pool and put our best team on the ice for the upcoming World Championship,” U.S. national women’s team head coach Ben Smith said. “Because the tournament is being played in Canada, it will make for exciting crowds and we will have a team worthy of that excitement.”

The upcoming Championship marks Engstrom’s first-ever competition with the U.S. senior women’s team. She will join former Badger and fellow defender Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) on the U.S. team, which is comprised of 11 Olympians and 16 of the 20 U.S. Select Team players who helped the United States win the gold medal at the 2003 Four Nations Cup in Skövde, Sweden, Nov. 5-9.

The Wisconsin defender is one of 10 skaters on Team USA playing for NCAA Division I programs. She also played for the U.S. Under-22 Select Team this past July in a three-game series against Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team as the Americans skated to a 2-0-1 record against their northern neighbors.

Currently tied for fourth on the team in overall scoring, Engstrom has tallied four goals and 10 assists for 14 points skating in 22 games for Wisconsin this season. She leads all Badger defenders in scoring and has collected a +17 standing to lead the entire squad. Additionally, she is fifth overall for defensive scoring in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and has helped Wisconsin place second overall among all WCHA schools in scoring defense.

In three years at Wisconsin, Engstrom has recorded 14 goals and 29 assists for 43 points. In 90 career games wearing the Cardinal and White, she has built a +34 on Wisconsin’s lines.

Engstrom and the fourth-ranked Badgers play host to No. 9 Minnesota State this Saturday and Sunday at the Kohl Center. The puck drops at 2:35 p.m. for both games in the series. Live stats and full recaps will be available on uwbadgers.com.
