BADGER HOCKEY FROSH EARN WCHA WEEKLY HONORS

MADISON, Wis. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association awarded two Wisconsin women’s hockey players with weekly honors for the week of Feb. 2.

The WCHA selected UW defender Bobbi-Jo Slusar as the Defensive Player of the Week and forward Sara Bauer as the Rookie of the Week after these two frosh helped lead the fourth-ranked Badgers to a series sweep of St. Cloud State on the road last weekend.

Slusar, a native of Swift Current, Saskatchewan and a member of the Canadian National Women’s Under-22 Team, tallied three assists during the Badgers’ series against the Huskies. She earned her first assist in Wisconsin’s 4-1 win Friday night at the National Hockey Center, then tacked on two more assists in the UW’s 6-2 victory Saturday night.

Overall, she finished +5 against St. Cloud State and is currently second on the team with a +15. In her first season as a Badger, she has three goals and six assists for nine points overall.

Slusar will miss this weekend’s series against Minnesota State at the Kohl Center. She will join fellow Canadian U-22 and Badger teammates Jackie Friesen and Meaghan Mikkelson to represent their country at the 2004 European Air Canada Cup in a three-game series against teams from Switzerland, Germany and Finland, Feb. 5-7, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Bad Tolz, Germany.

Like her fellow Badger classmate, Bauer finished the series with a +5 performance. As she has done almost the entire season, the young UW center continues to lead all of her teammates in scoring.

The St. Catharines, Ontario native posted two goals and three assists against St. Cloud State this past weekend. That scoring touch improved her season totals to four goals and a team-leading mark of 14 assists for 18 points overall in just 22 games wearing the Cardinal and White.

Bauer hits the ice this Saturday and Sunday at the Kohl Center with her Badger teammates against the ninth-ranked Mavericks. The puck drops for both games at 2:35 p.m. Live stats and full recaps will be available on uwbadgers.com.
