BADGERS SHUTOUT CATAMOUNTS 2-0 IN SEASON OPENER

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's hockey team earned its first
win of the 2003-04 season with a 2-0 shutout of visiting Vermont at the
Kohl Center Friday night. Frosh Meaghan Mikkelson scored the first goal
of her UW career and junior Nicole Uliasz led Wisconsin in scoring with
a goal and an assist.

After a scoreless first and second period, the Badgers had outshot the
Cats a barraging 61-11, but couldn't beat Vermont goaltender Kami Cote
in the net. Mikkelson, a forward from St. Albert, Alberta, finally broke
the scoring drought in the second minute of the final period. Uliasz and
Molly Engstrom assisted on the goal.

The Badgers continued their attack on the Vermont net, while the
Catamounts were held shotless throughout the third period. Team
assistant captain Steph Millar received the puck down ice from sophomore
Nikki Burish in the final momentss of the period to set up Uliasz'
goal with 32 seconds left in the game.

Wisconsin goaltender Meghan Horras, a UW sophomore, collected just six
saves courtesy of a strong Badger defense, while Vermont's Cote
recorded a school-record 66 saves in net for the Catamounts.

Wisconsin (1-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) and Vermont (0-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) return to
the Kohl Center ice Saturday afternoon, Oct. 11, at 3:05 p.m. prior to
the start of the 8 p.m. football game versus Ohio State at Camp Randall
Stadium.

for one hour prior to the women's hockey face-off and through the end
