WOMEN’S HOCKEY TO HOLD MEDIA DAY ON TUESDAY, OCT. 7

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women’s hockey team invites all members of the media to the Badger media day, Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 4:30 p.m. Head coach Mark Johnson, assistant coach Dan Koch and members of the women’s hockey team will be available for interviews at the UW practice rink located in the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center (The Shell). 

The Shell’s practice rink is accessible through the south main door and also through the new east entrance. Both doors are most easily accessible from Monroe St. on the south side of Camp Randall Stadium. Street parking is available in the surrounding area in addition to the Lot 17 parking ramp on the north side of Camp Randall Stadium.

The 2003-04 women’s hockey media guide, rosters, quick facts and other team information will be available for attending media. Additionally, season press and photography credentials will be available for pickup.

WISCONSIN RANKED SIXTH NATIONALLY, THIRD IN WCHA

Wisconsin is ranked sixth nationally in the USCHO Division I preseason poll and third in the WCHA Coaches Preseason Poll. After posting a 22-8-5 overall record and 14-6-4 mark in the WCHA last season, the Badgers will return 16 letterwinners this year from the squad that tied UW’s school record for most wins in a season (22) and established a school-record .700 winning percentage. 

Second-year head coach Mark Johnson and his assistant coaches, Tracey Cornell and Dan Koch, have added eight frosh to the lineup for added depth behind Wisconsin’s experienced core of players. 

Carla MacLeod, a junior defender, was named the 2003-04 team captain. MacLeod will be joined by seniors Meghan Hunter and Steph Millar as the team’s assistant captains. 

Cornell, MacLeod and Hunter will be attending the Team Canada Thanksgiving Festival next week and will be unavailable for media day interviews. The Festival, held the week of the Canadian Thanksgiving of Oct. 13, is the first step towards being chosen for Canada’s 2004 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Championship Team.

BADGERS OPEN SEASON AT HOME NEXT WEEKEND

The Wisconsin women open up their season with a two-game series at the Kohl Center against Vermont next weekend. The Catamounts will take to the Badger ice Friday, Oct. 10 at 7:05 p.m. and then again Saturday, Oct. 11 at 3:05 p.m. prior to the start of the 8 p.m. football game versus Ohio State at Camp Randall Stadium. 

The series marks the first-ever meeting between Wisconsin and Vermont. The Catamounts finished ninth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference standings with a 0-15-1 league record and 12-15-4 overall record under head coach Dennis Miller last season.
