#1 Gophers Blank Mavericks 4-0 in Second Game of WCHA Series

Mankato, Minn.-- The Minnesota Gophers lived up to their top billing with a 4-0 shutout over the Mavericks on Sunday to take three conference points in the series. Minnesota used goals by four different players to improve to 9-0-1 on the year and 7-0-1 in the WCHA. Minnesota State is now 7-4-1 and 4-3-1 in league play. The Maverick defense was able to hold the Gopher's top scorer Natalie Darwitz scoreless for the game, snapping a 24-game scoring streak for the sophomore.
Power-play opportunities proved to be the difference in the game as the Mavericks gave up two goals while down a player. The teams almost skated to a scoreless first period but an MSU penalty led to a Gopher goal at 18:41. Minnesota would add two even-strength tallies in the second as well. At the 19:04 mark of the second period, Maverick sophomore defender Amber Sharratt (Ramsey, Minn.) was assessed a five-minute major for kneeing. Minnesota State nearly came out of the power-play unscathed but surrendered the game's final goal at 2:48 of the third.
Senior goaltender Shari Vogt (Richmond, Minn.) was sternly tested once again, facing 41 shots in the game and collecting 37 saves. On the weekend, she had 78 saves on 83 shots faced. The five goals scored by the Gophers was the fewest the Mavericks have given up in a two game series since the two teams began playing each other in 1998-99.
