A lot of things aren't clear - it sounds like some kind of tournament for
girls select teams in the province or region that will take place as a
demonstration around the Worlds. (They were probably holding individual
tryouts to choose regional teams for the tournament - that's a good way of
spotting and developing elite players who may live in remote areas or who
may be much better than their teammates.)

I understood from the article that in Nova Scotia they don't allow a player
to play on a boys' and a girls' team at the same time. But the protesting
parents made it sound as if it wasn't possible for their daughters to get
releases from the boys' teams to sign with girls' teams, and that seems
hard to believe.
