Girls put on ice for tournament
N.S. bars youngsters who play with boys from participating in world

HALIFAX -- Young girls in Nova Scotia who choose to play hockey with
the boys have been excluded from participating in a prestigious girls'
tournament at the women's world championships here this spring.

"I don't know how the associations make their rules," said Christine
Saulnier, the incensed mother of 11-year-old Jill, a 4-foot, 90-pound
centre who has been playing with boys on mixed teams for six years.

"I do know that the female council at Hockey Nova Scotia is dedicated
to promoting girls hockey. They have done a wonderful job of it over
the years. But this just doesn't make any sense. They are excluding
girls who live, love, eat, drink and breathe hockey just because they
decided not to play on girls' teams.

"I don't want to take a spot from a little girl who plays on a female
team. But the girls who play with boys deserve a chance to try out."
Hockey Nova Scotia's 10-member council that governs girls' minor
hockey is meeting on the weekend to consider the parents' request to
open tryouts to all girls, no matter who they play with. But one
person familiar with the matter said the council is unlikely to budge.
Ms. Saulnier has said the group will consider legal action should that
   happen.

The International Ice Hockey Federation world women's championship is
scheduled for Halifax from March 30 through April 6, and will feature
the best female hockey players in the world, including Hayley
Wickenheiser, arguably the best female player on the planet.

The first woman to earn a skating position in a European men's
professional league, Ms. Wickenheiser abandoned her Finnish men's team
and returned home this week after receiving less and less ice time.
The feisty forward will represent Canada at the worlds and is a role
model for young girls. These parents want their daughters to have an
opportunity to play on the same ice.

"It's going to be an amazing experience," Ms. Saulnier said. "We're
going to buy our tickets, stand in line to get our sticks signed and
hope we get to meet [forward] Cassie Campbell. It's a
once-in-a-lifetime event. But our daughters can't even try out."

In Nova Scotia, players -- either boys or girls -- must sign a card of
intent that restricts them to either a girls' or boys' team.

Other provinces have more evolved rules. Neighbouring New Brunswick
introduced "double carding" 12 years ago, allowing girls who sign
first with a boys roster to play on girls' teams if they wish.

"The rule came about to promote female hockey," Brian Whitehead,
executive director of New Brunswick Hockey, said. "Girls who were
really good wanted to play in a more challenging environment, but
still be allowed to compete with other girls. It's been win-win for
   everyone."

Historically, girls' teams have more trouble getting precious and
expensive ice time, and are often considered less competitive.

"Female hockey in Nova Scotia is definitely not at the level of boys'
hockey and these girls are at an elite level," said Peter Truelove of
Liverpool, N.S., whose 11-year-old daughter, Rhylee, has been a
goaltender on boys teams since she was five because girls clubs were
   not available.

Lauchie MacIsaac, president of Nova Scotia Hockey, and Binney Leslie,
director of minor female hockey with the association, did not respond
to telephone and e-mail requests for interviews.

Until last year, Jill Saulnier was the only girl on her pee-wee team,
the Halifax Hawks; Cynthia Lohnes, a defender, joined this year.

"All they're doing is playing where they started," Jill's father,
Darren Saulnier, said. "If there had been a girls' team when they
started they'd be on a girls' team. Don't punish them now. This
excludes the better players and it's sad.

"When we registered, there was nothing said to us or any of the other
parents. I don't know how I'll ever explain this to an 11-year-old
   kid."
