UW WOMEN’S HOCKEY SIGNS FIRST RECRUIT FOR 2004

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin women’s hockey head coach Mark Johnson announced Friday that Jinelle Zaugg of Eagle River, Wis., has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Wisconsin and will join the Badgers’ 2004-05 roster.

A 6-0 forward on the Northland Pines boy’s hockey team, Zaugg previously played for the Wisconsin Wild and is currently skating with the Madison Capitols Girls U-19 Team in her free time. She is the daughter of Chuck and Pam Zaugg, the owners of Zaugg’s Resort located near the Nicolet National Forest in Eagle River.

“We’re all excited that Jinelle will be a part of our program,” Johnson said. “She’s a girl from Wisconsin, a girl with a lot of potential and I’m happy that she will have the opportunity to develop her game and excel in hockey as a member of our team.

“I’m looking forward to how she will progress throughout the rest of this season at Northland Pines and how she will adapt to the Division I level. She’s tall with good speed and the ability to score goals. I believe she will be able to make a contribution to our team right away.”

A four-year honor roll student and two-year member of Northland Pine’s National Honor Society, Zaugg is a member of the varsity boy’s hockey team as well as the girls’ cross country and soccer teams. After playing for Northland’s boys’ junior-varsity team, Zaugg moved up to varsity as a junior for 11 games where she tallied two goals and an assist for three points. She was named the team’s 2003 Most Improved Player.

A long-time member of the state’s U-19 girls teams, she has helped Wisconsin advance to state and national tournaments with national titles at the Chicago Showcase, in addition to being named the Showcase’s Most Valuable Player her junior year as a member of Team Wisconsin. Additionally, she was named the U-15 National Skills Champion in the Easton Skills Competition as a sophomore after helping lead the Wisconsin Challengers to a runner-up finish at the national championship in Anchorage, Alaska.

As a senior this season, Zaugg captained her cross country team and was named Most Valuable Runner, while capping her junior season of soccer as a team captain and all-conference selection earlier this spring. Zaugg and the Northland Pines boy’s hockey team begin their season Tuesday, Dec. 2 against Mosinee High School.
