MacLEOD EARNS WCHA DEFENSIVE WEEKLY HONOR

MADISON, Wis. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association named Wisconsin women’s hockey junior defender Carla MacLeod the league’s Defensive Player of the Week for Nov. 17-23. The team captain tallied assists on three of the seventh-ranked Wisconsin’s four goals in the Badgers’ 4-3 win against 10th-ranked Minnesota State Saturday.

A native of Calgary, Alberta, MacLeod led the Badgers in scoring with her three assists Saturday and the win allowed the UW to sweep the Mavericks for the series. Wisconsin had shutout Minnesota State 3-0 on Friday. The sweep moved the Badgers up to second place in the WCHA standings with a 9-3-0 overall record and 5-3-0 league record behind first-place Minnesota (8-0-0, 6-0-0 WCHA).

The series against Minnesota State marked MacLeod’s return to the Badger lineup after playing with the Canadian women’s senior national team at the 2003 Four Nations Cup in Sweden, Nov. 5-9. MacLeod helped her country defeat both Finland and Sweden before losing to the United States, 2-1, in the gold-medal game after a 22-shot sudden-death shootout.

On the Badger ice, MacLeod has racked up seven points in seven games played so far this season, all from assists. In three seasons wearing the Cardinal and White, she has collected four goals and 35 assists for 39 points in 57 games. Although she was selected to the WCHA’s All-Tournament team as a defender in 2002, this award is her first conference weekly honor.

MacLeod will lead Wisconsin this weekend as the Badgers return home to play St. Cloud State (2-6-0, 0-4-0) for a two-game series at the Eagle’s Nest Ice Arena in Verona, Wis., Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Live stats and full recaps will be available on uwbadgers.com.
