U.S. Women's Select Team Advances To Gold-Medal Game After Defeating Host
Sweden, 5-1, At 2003 Four Nations Cup

SKÖVDE, Sweden -- The 2003 United States Women's Select Team defeated
Sweden, 5-1, in the final round-robin game for both teams at the 2003 Four
Nations Cup here this evening. The U.S., which improved to 3-0-0 with the
win, will next face Canada in the gold-medal game, while Sweden will take on
Finland for the bronze medal.

The U.S. notched two first-period goals from forwards Cammi Granato (Downers
Grove, Ill.) and Krissy Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.). Granato knocked the
puck loose from a defender in the offensive zone and put it past Swedish
goaltender Kim Martin at 1:21 to make the score 1-0. Wendell tallied the
second U.S. goal on a pass from defenseman Gen Richardson (Monroe, Conn.).

Sweden scored its first goal at 13:31 of the second period. Gunilla
Andersson wristed a shot over U.S. goaltender, Sara DeCosta-Hayes' stick for
Sweden's only tally of the game. The U.S. kept its lead, notching two more
goals in the second stanza. The first came at 16:43 from Jenny Potter
(Eagan, Minn.) on a pass from defenseman Julianne Vasichek (Great Falls,
Mont.) to make the score 3-1. Granato scored her second of the night on a
short-handed opportunity to increase Team USA's lead to 4-1. After receiving
a long pass through the neutral zone Granato skated into the slot and
slipped the puck into the net from the right doorstep. Defensemen Lyndsay
Wall (Churchville, N.Y.) and Jamie Hagerman (Wenham, Mass) assisted on the
tally.

Katie King (Salem, N.H.) finished the scoring for the U.S. with a goal at
6:21 of the third period. The puck was turned over in the neutral zone to
Natalie Darwitz (Edina, Minn.) who registered the only helper. Darwitz
skated the puck into the zone and slid it across the slot to King, who
netted the fifth and final goal for Team USA.

Granato and Maria Roth were named Players of the Game for the U.S. and
Sweden, respectively.

Earlier in the day, Canada defeated Finland, 5-1. Team USA will next play
Canada in the gold-medal game on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. (EST), while Sweden
and Finland face off at 7:00 a.m. (EST).
