FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 6, 2003

U.S. Women's Select Team Defeats Rival Canada, 2-0,
At 2003 Four Nations Cup

SKOVDE, Sweden -- The 2003 United States Women's Select Team blanked
Canada, 2-0, in the second game for both teams at the 2003 Four Nations Cup
here this evening. Team USA got goals from forwards Katie King (Salem, N.H.)
and Natalie Darwitz (Eagan, Minn.), while goaltender Pam Dreyer (Eagle
River, Alaska) made 27 saves on the way to her first victory and shutout in
her senior national team debut.
In a scoreless first period, both teams had power-play opportunities but
could not convert as Dreyer and Canada's Sami-Jo Small turned aside 13 and
eight shots, respectively.
Team USA took two penalties early in the second period to give Canada a
five-on-three advantage for 1:06, but the U.S. penalty killers held strong,
allowing only one shot on goal. With the U.S. skating on its own power play,
King finally broke the scoreless tie at 13:36 of the period as she gathered
a Jenny Potter (Eagan, Minn.) rebound and roofed the puck over Small's
stick.
Darwitz put the game away for Team USA at 9:21 of the third stanza,
making
the final score 2-0. With Canada skating on the power play, Small came out
of the net to pass the puck to a teammate but misfired and Darwitz picked up
the loose puck and shot it into the open net.
Darwitz and Colleen Sostorics were named Players of the Game for the U.S.

and Canada, respectively.
Earlier in the day, Sweden defeated Finland in overtime, 2-1. Team USA
will
next face Sweden in its final round-robin game on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
(EST).
