Being that I'm from the USA, I don't read the Toronto Star, but coverage
of women's hockey is virtually nil in my area. Last year I sent a
message asking if the NWHL was going to be broadcast on a high level
cable company. I had hoped that maybe ESPN/ESPN2 would be considered. I
was told that they were possibly looking at the Oxygen channel.

If women's hockey is trying to market itself, then they would be better
off getting a contract with a network that would target the sports
market, not a channel that caters to women. Most men when they watch
women's hockey discover that it's not some 'boring' version of the game.
There's still body contact and there is definitely great stickhandling
and other skills that are not below the NHL version.

I don't buy the issue that the women's game is so much slower than the
NHL. That's another flimsy excuse to not broadcast women's hockey. I'm
not bashing any team/league in particular, but they broadcast men's
minor league games and to be honest, I haven't seen that much of a
difference between those teams and the women's play in the Olympics.

It all comes down to the networks worrying about advertising revenue. If
people will watch cheerleading and strongman competitions, then I'm sure
there's room for women's hockey. Once a fan base has been established,
things will open up and women's hockey won't be the sport that's only
seen on TV every few years in the Olympics.
