This happened to us last year in a very large tournament. We were in the right division (the lowest one possible). We lost 2-0 in our first game, lost 9-0 2nd game, and tied 1-1 in the third game. Guess which team went on to win the division (and beat all other teams by the same margin (if not more?) You guessed it! The team that beat us 9-0. (There was one other team in the divison like them - and they faced each other in the finals.

It is often hard for tournament organizers to "police" this. This particular tournament had well over 350 teams!

If a team is new to a tournament, it is the RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PERSON ENTERING THE TEAM IN THE TOURNAMENT (ie. the team manager) to make sure that their team is placed in the right division. ASK QUESTIONS when registering! Describe your level. ASK MORE QUESTIONS!

I can't imagine that team delibrately put themselves in lower divisions just so that they can win it easily. (If they do, it is pretty pathetic.) I CAN imagine that they end up in the wrong division becuase they do not ask the right questions or they do not honestly assess their own level of play.

Hopefully, the tournament organizers keep an eye on teams that win all games by blowout, and at the very least, make a note if it and make the teams move up a division or two the following tournament.

The only good thing that came to us out of the 9-0 loss is that we got a really cool photo of my teammate and me totally CRUNCHING some "innocent soul" on the other team. :-) The ref said we both deserved to go to the sin-bin, but since we were already losing by a ridiculous amount, he sent just my teammate.
