Looks like the Bush administration is trying  to mess with Title IX. 
Next month, a 15 person commission appointed by the administration 
will probably recommend that the law be enforced in a less rigid 
manner.  They want to modify the way proportionality, whereby the 
percentage of female students must equal the number of female 
athletes, is determined.  The number of women playing varsity sports 
has increased 5 fold since 1972.  This still does not begin to 
represent the number of women in college.   If Title  IX is 
dismantled, or even just weakened, we could see women's sport shift 
back towards the pre-1972 numbers both in number of athletes and 
amount of money spent.

The National Women's Law Center in Washington, is taking a stand on
