I would like to see the papers focus on female athletic stories for
their own merit more than playing the male versus female card too! I do
not think that this will happen though until we take a stand and stop
supporting papers and media that do not support females in sport.
Before we hammer the Star too much I would like to add that Lois
Kalchman writes for The Star and I would have to say that it is one
paper in Canada that carries more female hockey stories than any other.
Lois has been writing about the female game for over 30 years.
The one piece that really made me smile - all stories aside, was that
The Star put female hockey players on the cover of a Canadian Newspaper.
It is my hope that a young girl will take up the game for the first time
because she saw some other young players on the front page!

In general I'd have to say that I'm not very happy at all with the
Toronto Star's coverage of women's hockey. It seems that they only
really focus on women's hockey when the story involves some form of
men's hockey. They have been covering Hayley's hockey in Finland
because she is a woman playing on a men's team. And of course they
covered the Dolphins since this is a girls' team that played in a
boys' tournament.

I wish the media would get over their fascination with comparing men's
and women's hockey and just cover female hockey for what it is. I
think it would be great if I could open the Toronto Star every morning
to read the details of an NWHL game! They do provide the results of
some international women's games, but I wish there was more consistent
coverage of women's hockey.
