While it's great to see the girls beat the boys, the ice was tilted in their
favour before the first puck was dropped.

As someone close to the situation, coaching girls hockey and officiating
boys/girls hockey in Toronto, this was a no-brainer.
Yes, the Dolphins team had permission from the OWHA to participate in the
boys tournament. But this was a house league select boys tournament.
In boys hockey in Toronto, their are five levels of hockey.
AAA, AA, A, select and house league.

The Dolphin coach was well aware of the level of his team and of the
competition. His team had three girls who played AA boys hockey, three who
played A boys hockey and the balance were likely strong enough to play house
league select hockey.
The boys teams were all house league players who were selected to play in
the tournament to represent their association. Some teams may have had
players that were A level, who elected to stay in house league, but very
few.

The Dolphins coach knew his team and the level of his players and should
have been advised to enter into a A level tournament.
At that age one or two strong AA players, girls or boys, can make a big
difference in the outcome of the game.
An atom team from the Willowdale Red Wings, fourth place in the same
division as the first place Dolphins, entered the West Mall boys tournament
a few years ago in the A division and went 1-1-1.
But the A level hockey at that age is now contact and that would deter girls
teams from entering.

Congratulations to the girls, but hopefully the OWHA and GTHL administration
has learned from this mistake, and AA players regardless of gender will not
be allowed in a house league select tournament.
What's the point of levels if they aren't enforced.

John
