Hello everyone,

I am passing along this very unfortunate news about Dave McMaster who
was the women's hockey coach for the University of Toronto Varsity
(Lady) Blues for 22 years, and for Team Canada at the 1990 Women's
World Championship. Dave will surely be missed by everyone.

Here are some articles from various Toronto newspapers....

(2) Toronto Star

In case you have not heard from other sources we are saddened to report
that Dave McMaster passed away suddenly earlier this week.

Dave coached the Blues Women's Hockey team from 1967-69 and 1975-93. He
was an outstanding builder of our program and women's hockey in Canada.
He was inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame in
2000. The following was his induction citation:

Dave McMaster provided the inspiration, heart and soul to the
University of Toronto women's hockey program for twenty years. During
this time he helped to establish one of the strongest athletic
traditions at U of T and to create a new audience for women's ice
hockey around the world. As head coach from 1967-69 and 1975-93, Dave
led the Varsity Blues to an enviable list of accomplishments, including
12 OWIAA titles in 14 years.

An outstanding coach and ambassador for intercollegiate and provincial
hockey, Dave is considered a hockey genius by advocates and opponents
alike. His 82 per cent success rate while coach of the Blues is a
strong illustration of his outstanding abilities. Under Dave's
guidance, the Blues won 212 OWIAA league and playoff games, tying 22
games and losing only 38.

Dave's seemingly endless energy and enthusiasm helped to make the dream
of international hockey for women a reality. He has coached the
Canadian national team - frequently dipping into the talent pool on the
Varsity Blues - to great success, including the 1987 gold medal and the
1990 gold medal at the first official IIHF Womens World Championship

We understand that the family is dealing with his loss privately this
week but plan to put an announcement about future arrangements in the
Toronto Star and Globe & Mail on Saturday Feb 8th.

Obviously the women's hockey community is shocked and saddened. Lois
Kalchman has a report on many reactions in today's edition of the
Toronto Star.

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues family echoes these tributes.

Sincerely

Sharon Bradley
