Girls sue to force move of state hockey tourney to bigger arena
Associated Press

Published November 26, 2003 GHOC27

Eleven female student-athletes filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to force the
Minnesota State High School League to move the girls' state hockey tournament from a University of Minnesota arena to the larger Xcel Energy Center. The lawsuit alleges the league is violating Title IX, a federal law that
requires equal opportunity for girls' and women's interscholastic athletics.
The boys' state high school tournament has been played at Xcel, home of the
NHL's Minnesota Wild, since 2001, the lawsuit notes. But when the league
decided to move the girls' tournament out of the old State Fair Coliseum starting last season, it picked the new Ridder Arena, home of the Gopher women's hockey team, over Xcel.

Girls who make it to the state tournament deserve the same chance to play in
a professional sports arena that boys get, said Kathleen Marron, an attorney
for the 11 players, who include six from Cloquet High School and two from The
Blake School.

``Ridder Arena is a fine facility, but cannot remotely be considered equal to
the Xcel Energy Center,'' said the complaint, which was filed in Hennepin
County District Court.

Ridder has a paid seating capacity of 2,742 compared with 9,295 for the
lower-level of Xcel, the complaint says, and it argues that Xcel has better
amenities including more comfortable seating, better locker rooms, and concessions, a better scoreboard and sound system, a more convenient downtown location, more parking, and Xcel has electronic signs outside and inside promoting upcoming events while Ridder does not.
Ridder ``doesn't have enough capacity for the tournament to grow,'' Marron
added. She noted that past state tournaments have often drawn larger crowds than Ridder can seat.

The lawsuit asks the court for an injunction to require the league to move
the tournament to Xcel. Marron said. ``Several of our clients are seniors and
they'll never be able to play in Xcel if we don't act now,'' she said.

Howard Voigt, a spokesman for the high school league, said he couldn't
comment on the lawsuit because league officials hadn't seen the complaint.
