The decision to shut down WTSN, the women's sports digital television
channel, speaks more about the pace of growth in digital TV channels
than it does about a lack of interest in women's sports, according to
CTV president Rick Brace.
"The growth of the digital tier didn't occur as quickly as we
expected, and that meant some of our audiences were marginal, which
limited advertising growth," Brace said yesterday, after CTV Specialty
Television announced it was closing WTSN effective Sept. 30. "And it's
expensive to produce sports, because you're doing a lot of original
programming.
"It was my hope that we could create a genre within a genre. Women's
sports is not dead. Not at all. It's just that we might have been a
little ahead of ourselves."
WTSN received its license in 2000 and went on the air in September,
2001. Long-time Canadian sports journalist Sue Prestedge was its
senior vice-president. WTSN covered the LPGA, WNBA and Women's United
Soccer Association as well as Canadian university women's hockey.
WTSN will most likely be remembered for televising Hayley
Wickenheiser's debut with Kirkkonummi Salamat of the Finnish men's
league in January. The prime-time replay of the game brought in an
audience of 21,000.
The closure affects 11 employees, five of whom will be reassigned
within the company. CTV said it was pursuing other opportunities for
the remaining six positions.
Some of the programming from WTSN will be moved to other CTV channels.
TSN, which already shows the women's hockey championships, Scott
Tournament of Hearts and tennis and figure skating championships, will
increase its coverage of women's programming by broadcasting 27 hours
of the women's curling tour and the remaining LPGA events that were
scheduled for WTSN, including the Tour Championship.
"We saw significant interest in some women's sports," Brace said.
"There's no reason TSN can't become the home for women's sports."
