Hughes hired as Canadian women's hockey coach

Canadian Press

Toronto In some ways Karen Hughes faces a more difficult task as the new head coach of the Canadian women's hockey team than her predecessor.

She has inherited a team that has won everything there is to win in international women's hockey.

And the Canadian players have all gone back to the lives they put on hold while they lived and trained in Calgary for a year before their successful Olympic campaign.

Hughes, who has coached the women's under-22 program the past two seasons, has signed with the Canadian Hockey Association for one year as head coach, succeeding Danicle Sauvageau, who returned to her job as a Montreal police officer after helping Canada win a world title in 2001 and Olympic gold this year.

The challenge for Hughes is to prepare a Canadian team still on a high from beating the United States for the Olympic gold in Salt Lake City.

"This year the players are on such a high, it's hard to sustain that," said Hughes, who was appointed coach yesterday.

But she prefers coming off a win to the scenario of 1999, when she served as an assistant on a team that had lost the Olympic gold to the United States the previous year.

The U.S. team also has scattered after two years of training together full-time in Lake Placid, N.Y., and no exhibitions are scheduled this winter between the two rivals other than the Four Nations tournament in Kitchener, Ont., in November.

And in the rest of the world, which isn't deep in women's hockey, it remains to be seen how active other countries are, given that it is another four years until Olympic medals are again on the line in Turin in 2006.

"It's probably a hard year to do it because we're now starting towards the first year in a four-year process towards the next Olympics," Hughes said of taking over the program.

"I think it's the lightest year it's actually ever been. Even in 1998-99 we did more. You have to have people to play against."

The Canadian women have a reputation to uphold as the world and Olympic defending champions.

The 2003 world championship in Beijing next April is an opportunity for Canada to win an eighth successive world title and attempt to continue its 35-game winning streak at the tournament.

Hughes recognizes the players' lives became more crowded with off-ice commitments after winning the gold medal.

"We have to try and balance those competing priorities in our players lives as well as doing well at the world championship."

The head coaching position is a part-time position. That's okay with Hughes, who works full-time for the Ontario government and also coaches the University of Toronto women's team.

"This works for me within what I do," said the 39-year-old from Toronto, who is a former university hockey and all-star soccer player for the Varsity Blues.

With only one veteran defenceman Geraldine Heaney announcing her retirement from the Canadian team, Hughes could be faced with the difficult choice of cutting an Olympic veteran for a rising talent.

"Absolutely, so I think that will be the challenge, making decisions with an eye to the future," she said. "Those are good things to have. It shows the depth of the program."

There have been some changes to the women's program, the most notable being the hiring of former assistant coach Wally Kozak as a full-time scout and director of player personnel.

Julie Healey has been brought on board and made director of all female programs.

The Canadian team has reverted to its formula of non-Olympic years of bringing the players from their respective schools or National Women's Hockey League teams together for camps and tournaments throughout the winter.

"This year is a challenging year because we're not going to be together very much," Hughes said.

"The players, you're not seeing them every day so they have to take a lot of responsibility to prepare themselves."

Hughes has been in the Canadian Hockey Association's pool of women's coaches since 1996, serving as an assistant for the Olympic team and world championship teams in 1999 and 2000 as well as head coach of the under-22 program for the past two seasons.

"I think she's very technically strong," said Cassie Campbell, captain of the Olympic team. "She's been an athlete at a pretty high level.

"She played soccer and hockey and that's something our coaches have been missing in the past, is that they haven't really played sports at a high level and I think she brings that to the table."

Hughes will be assisted by Mike Pelino, who has coached the national men's team at tournaments, and Ken Dufton, coach of the National Women's Hockey League's Beatrice Aeros.

Canada will play host to the Four Nations tournament, which includes the United States, Sweden and Finland Nov. 6 to 10 in Kitchener.

The Canadian women's team will open the 2002-2003 season with a development camp Oct. 8 to 13 in Toronto.

Funny story, well to me anyway...

I met Karen Hughes after the gold medal game in Salt Lake. I had been
wandering the halls of the theatre where the teams (both Canada and US) went
to celebrate/mourn. As I was leaving, I was listening to the women in front
of me talk and one of them says "Oh, yah" in that thick Canadian accent. I
just started laughing (oh, yah is an inside joke on my team) and they turned
around and I said "Well, I don't have to guess which team you're with." She
and I spoke briefly about the game, how nervous the US appeared, etc. I
recall her saying that the US couldn't get their shots on goal during
warm-ups, and that that was a sign from the start that things were off. We
stopped in front of the Team Canada room and I finished the conversation with
"It's ok, we'll get it back next year," and we both laughed a little, knowing
that I meant the WWC in China. I glanced at her credentials and have since
wondered who she was. I guess now I know.

I've got a hypothetical question for the list...

How early can you start a little one skating?
My daughter is 15 months old and walks on land without a hitch.
I want to try her on skates this fall/winter. Am I crazy?

thanks
Pia

All our 4 girls started between 18 months and 2 years, depending on
when their birthdays fell. They all skate beautifully, although one
never really liked it. Remember, no bob skates cuz they need to find
their center of gravity. ALWAYS use a helmet on little ones. If she
protests, pack it in and save the joy of skating for another day.
You may not be able to find skates small enough. They used to make
kids size 6, but not any more. I found a vintage pair at a garage
sale in Toronto. They did just fine, and now hang from a nail in a
place of honor. (They are white.)

My husband decided that from an early age, one of our girls was a
born hockey player, and he would check her (gently) into the wall in
a narrow hallway whenever they passed. She thought this was the best
game in the world, bumping daddy into the walls. Now she is
aggressive and feisty, has been playing since she was 6, and it is
her life. It is never to early to start the love of hockey.

My kids both learned on double-blade skates with helmets even though some
people told me not to start with that. Within a short time they were ready
for single blade skates. My son learned at 18 months and my daughter learned
at 3 or 4 years old. They both play travel ice hockey and can't stand to go
more than a few days without skating.
