Sorry for the non-hockey post, but...

The women-in-hockey mailing list is being inundated with attacks by
various windows computer viruses. It's getting ridiculous over here in
List Admin central. In looking through the last 50 or so viruses I've
been sent, it seems there are at least FOUR list members actively
sending viruses out to the list (and all of their friends).

This is very dangerous and irresponsible.

Since I'm tired of cleaning up all of this (it's a waste of my time, if
nothing else) and since this has been going on for a while (meaning
these people aren't paying attention, or they'd have fixed their
systems by now), I've decided to post this to the list to see if I can
get your attention.

If you are running a windows box, and you are NOT running anti-virus
software, and you are NOT keeping that anti-virus software up to date,
you are being an irresponsible and dangerous user on the internet. If
you're infected with a virus, you're not just sending it to ME, you're
sending it to everyone in your address book -- friends, family,
co-workers. Imagine how happy THEY will be finding out you're the idiot
sending them all those viruses. Imagine how happy they'll be if they
find out you're the idiot who infected them.

There's no excuse for that. Infections happen, but when a system stays
infected (and some of thse have been infected for at least two months),
it's a sign you don't care. Maybe we need to make you care.

I want people to understand what my policy is here. If you get infected
and don't get the virus fixed on your system, you're not welcome here.
If I have to start tracking down the sources of these virus attacks
(and that's what they are, your computer is attacking mine), then the
people responsible for those computers will be removed from my mailing
lists and are no longer welcome to subscribe to them. If you don't care
about sending viruses to your mom, your kids, your friends or your
boss, at least care enough to not want to get kicked off this mailing
list in disgrace.

If you haven't checked your computer for viruses recently, you're
overdue. it's a basic requirement of being on the internet today, and
I'm rather disappointed that I had to step up and play Jimminy Crickett
at you all. (for the record, it's ONLY this mailing list. I'm not
seeing virus attacks on any of my others).

Please go check, disenfect, and protect your computers. Now. If nothing
else, you don't want to be the person I find on the other end of these
attacks, if I'm forced to go looking.

Thanks.

chuq
