Hi Liz,

My 2 cents' worth is that you should put your
strongest players at center. I've been playing for 5
years and have played on a whole # of teams and that
always seems to work best.

Then I would decide wing pairs on who works best
together. If you have two people who always seem to
go over to the right side even if one of them is
technically left wing, I wouldn't put them together.

It might also help if you have your strongest center
with your weakest pair of wings, but I've seen mixed
results when that's been tried.

As for your defensive pairings, ask around...if you
have a strong natural skater who doesn't have much
hockey experience but a lot of potential, and if she
wants to play defense, why not pair her up with your
strongest defenseman? They can work together and the
less-experienced player can cultivate her skills.

I've had the same defense partner on my women's travel
team for a few years now, and she's much more
aggressive while I play a more stay-at-home style.
That pairing works well for us. But everyone needs to
be responsible defensively in the end.

Finally, impress on your wingers that they really need
to not leave the defensive zone before the puck does.
It sometimes takes awhile for new players to pick that
up. If you practice, work on and develop even a most
basic breakout play so that the wingers know where
they should be. Your defense will need someone to
pass to in order to clear the zone, otherwise they
will be defending the whole game (and they will get
mentally and physically tired, which makes for a long
game!).

Sorry to go on and on. I just love talking puck!
Hope this helps.

I've been playing hockey for just two months now. I joined a group from
work (male and female) that includes people who have never skated
before. I skated 20 years ago, but never played hockey, and I thought it
would be fun. Plus it was geared for novices, and there was going to be
someone who taught us the ropes.

Well, the "teaching" is about 15 minutes of drills. Then we play a
scrimmage. This was okay, until some of the better players (some who've
played before) decided to get macho, and things started getting more
physical. I had assumed that since most of us are beginners that
no-check was understood. I guess I was mistaken.

Well, to make a long story short, I managed to get in the way of a hot
dogger on Monday night (another player blocked us from seeing each
other). He hit me so hard that he snapped my neck back amd I got a
concussion. Of course, I didn't know I had a concusions until the next
day when people explained what happened and I realized I had blacked
out. On top of that, they let me drive home (30 minutes away). I'm an
adult, but I wasn't in the right frame of mind to determine if I was
competent to drive or not. But nobody seemed to be concerned so I
figured I was overreacting.

I guess I'm wondering if what happened to me is common. I really
(really) like playing hockey, but I'm afraid to put myself in a position
to get a concussion again (I also had a sore spine, which is scary). I
have three children and a job I need. I've missed three days of work
this week because I can't focus and my head is pounding.

Am I nuts or unrealistic to think I could find a group to play with that
is just recreational and that I won't have to worry about getting
seriously hurt?

Sometimes accidents happen in nonchecking leagues and people run into each other hard. How did the guy, assuming it was a guy being macho, act after hitting you? Was he sorry or did he yell at you like it was all your fault?

In our co-ed league checking is not acceptable, but people do accidently hit each other. If anyone gets out of control and goes after someone to injury them they get kicked out of our league. If people get too serious then we don't need them.

Get out, now! There is no point in being on a team that doesn't care
didley-squat about you. You obviosly don't care much for it, so why
continue.

Try to find an I-League or take a skating class, if only to get in touch with
other beginners.

My 2cents

Carolyn,

Find a different team. There are programs out there for beginners. Sunday
afternoon recreational hockey. Our Sunday women's team fills the void between
competitive and learn to skate. A number of women joined us after having
scary experiences with coed teams. They realized that the chances of getting
injured were to great and that they needed a safer slower environment. Our
ages range from 16 to 50+. Some move on to competitive teams and some of us
just keep coming back because it's great fun. Good luck finding the right
team for you. Remember, you are supposed to be having fun. If you are in
Maryland, we have the team for you.
