June 19, 2002 Women's Hockey Coach Candidates Announced St. Cloud, Minn. --
St. Cloud State University Director of Athletics Dr. Morris Kurtz has
announced plans to interview four new candidates for the position of head
women's hockey coach at the University. The candidates will be interviewed
on campus on June 24, June 25 and June 26. The four candidates to be
interviewed are: Melody Davidson - The assistant coach for the Canadian
Olympic Team from 2000 to 2002, Davidson currently works as the coaching
development coordinator with Hockey Alberta. A 1986 graduate of the
University of Alberta, Davidson served as head coach for the Connecticut
College women's ice hockey team from 1997-2000. She will be interviewed on
June 24. Jason Lesterberg - The head women's hockey coach at Bemidji State
University since 2001, Lesterberg was an NCAA Division I Coach of the Year
finalist in 2001-02. A 1996 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College and
All-America hockey award winner for the Gusties, Lesterberg served as
women's hockey coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from 2000
to 2001. He also worked as an assistant coach with the Gustavus Adolphus
men's program from 1997 to 2000. He will be interviewed on June 26. Steve
Nelson - Nelson currently serves as the commissioner for the America West
Hockey League (a men's Junior A development league), a position he has held
since 2000. From 1986 to 2000, Nelson was the head coach for the University
of Wisconsin-Superior men's hockey program (249-166-21 overall record). At
UW-S, Nelson led his squad to six NCAA Division III Final Four berths. He
also served as the athletic director at UW-S from 1994 to 2000, and helped
the Yellowjackets add three new sports - including women's hockey. Nelson is
a 1984 graduate of the University of Minnesota. He will be interviewed on
June 25. Dave Palmquist - The girls' head varsity hockey coach at South St.
Paul High School since 1994, Palmquist led his club to the 2002 MSHSL Class
AA state championship in 2002. The Minnesota Coach of the Year in 1999 and
2001, Palmquist owns a 171-30-10 record as a prep coach at South St. Paul,
where he also serves as a teacher and department chair in physical
education/health. A 1987 graduate of Bethel College, Palmquist will be
