You're right Louise.

That's exactly what I think was the principal's decision making factor for
not allowing sports teams at her school. She did not allow boys, or girls'
hockey teams. And you're right about the fact that ALL those players on a
school hockey team would be elite (rep) players, playing hockey in a rep.
league already. Otherwise, they'd probably not make this team.

This is why we tried to make it painless in every respect for the principal
so she could allow us to have a team. She would have to do nothing. We
took care of everything last year (except the buses), and this year we were
willing to do that too. We already had teacher resources, and qualified
coaches. And we had much interest from many players, and they all knew it
would be costly. For Jaime, to play on a Boys Tier 1 High School team, is
like a dream come true - and she wasn't the backup goalie either. She
actually played more games last year than the other goalie. And what a
wonderful resume item that would be, if she was to go further with her
hockey?

Anyway, that's in the past now. I guess we can concentrate on next year
now.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!
Debbie

Actually, from what I understood, there aren't any competitive teams at the
school, and Jaime's mum is trying to organize a boys'/co-ed team.

Hockey fanatic though I am, I think that if I were in charge of deciding
how to distribute the limited resources of a high school (not just money,
but also teacher supervision time), I would lean towards supporting
activities which are not available in the community and/or which could be
done without much money from the individual families. There is so much
community hockey for teenagers in Ontario (recreational and competitive,
girls'-only and boys' teams which include girls) that high school hockey is
just a bonus - mostly for the same kids who are already playing on
community teams.

Louise
