I go to an all-girls high school in Northern New Jersey. I have loved hockey
ever since I was little. Someone gave me the idea to start a high school
team. I did TONS of research - I found out all the other "local" teams (when
I saw local, I mean less than 3 hours away) that we could play against if
there was a team at my school, the cost of ice time in the rinks nearby, and
how many people were interested. Amazingly, over 35 girls were equally as
excited as I was about starting a team (I thought the most I would get would
be around 5). My guidance counselor helped, as did some of my guy friends who
play hockey. I gave all my info to the athletic director (who was almost
overwhelmed with everything I wanted to do). He was going to speak with my
principal about it over the weekend. I'm hoping for a YES! Any girl who goes
to a co-ed school with a boys hockey team is better off, because they can use
the Title IX argument, and the school already knows about the costs and
everything. To all the other girls out there who are trying to start your own
teams too, good luck!

Meghan
