This was not the case in our school. We funded the team last year, the
teacher and coach were volunteers. The only thing the school funded were
the buses, and we were willing to cover that too this year. I would
understand if that was the issue here. The principal had also indicated
that was not an issue. I believe if we can fund the team, provide a teacher
and qualified coach, then I just don't see a reason why they cannot have a
team.

Sorry to hear your experience with school hockey was not the best. That was
certainly not the case with Jaime, and her teammates last year. This team
helped Jaime get even better because she was playing with "AA" and "AAA"
older players and the hockey was spectacular. I believe the reason our
principal may not approve a hockey team is that it sometimes can be viewed a
violent, especially because there are frequent fights breaking out during
the games (on the ice). This is what I believe to be why she does not
approve of this sport. Some schools really support these sports and some
schools don't.

Anyway, this season is gone, Jaime is playing hockey and loving it (as
always), and we'll have to see about next season.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!
Debbie

I don't think this is a Title IX issue. This is an issue about what the
school feels is important to support with the limited funding available
these days. Let's face it, not too many people are going to cry over the
cut of high school hockey in Canada as there are just too many other places
to play. And they aren't going to vote for a tax increase to help cover the
costs. A school board in my area just voted to cut ALL spring sports as it
was just too expensive. Now this has lots of people upset but they are all
out trying to raise money so the sports can continue without funding from
the school board. This is because it is the only exposure these kids have
to get scholarships for US colleges. Now if there was no major junior
hockey leagues in Canada and the high school league was wear all the
potential NHLers hung out, the programs wouldn't be cut.

I played high school hockey and personally, I would have rather just played
with my league team. The only good part is representing your school and the
special "social" conditions that athletes have in school. In all honesty I
would be more upset if they cut the band or a drama program as there is no
where else for those kids to play.
