I have been out of town for a long time, so excuse me if my point of view has
already been stated (I haven't read all the e-mails yet). I grew up playing
with boys, learn to skate through bantam I played boy's house. I not once
felt "funny" or "different" because I was the only girl, instead I made many
friends on my teams, many of whom I still talk to. There were a couple of
snickering fans but I learned to ignore them and focus on my love for the
game. I received a lot of support from the program, and my teammates. Once
I moved on to 19 and Under girls travel hockey, I felt even more respect. I
have not encountered the sexist experiences you all have had. As a matter of
fact, my team won the Michigan State Championship this past season, and we
were thrown a party by the Midget AA team in our arena. I am not ignorant
about sexism, I honestly don't detect any. Our banner hangs proudly from the
rafters in our arena, and our trophy is centered in the trophy case,
receiving the respect it deserves. I'm sorry to hear that so many have had
negative vibes thrown at them, but I have to say it's not the same
everywhere. I am surely proud to be involved in Kalamazoo, MI and Jackson,
MI hockey, because women have gotten the respect they deserve. I have
witnessed sexism in other cities my team has visited, and I have seen some
situations dealt with maturely and immaturely. It makes all the difference
in the world which path you choose to help deal with it. LOVE HOCKEY!!! :)
