I'm just starting to play with the 'co-ed' mostly male league as well as
the women's league that I've been playing with for a year. Last game I
got into a domino-like sandwich. I was going after a guy with the puck,
one of his teammates went after me, and all three of us went down. I was
pissed and got up and shoved the guy who had hit me from behind. It was
all in front of my bench and my male teammates all cheered me when I got
back on the bench. Overall, the guys really seem to appreciate my
willingness to give and take a hit. If you play full out and give it all
you've got, most of them will respect you. There are always a couple of
inflated egos around, but then I've found that in the women's leagues as
well.

And on the flipside, I skated in front of a big guy, he fell on me, tore
the
cartilidge in my ribs and all he had to say was "nice hipcheck."

But hey, he didn't score. Then again, neither did I for the next 2
months.

Kat, shutup. I'm bonding.

Hi Jennifer,

Have you heard about the Olympic Clinics that the Atlanta Thrashers Women's
Hockey team is putting on?

Check it out at www.ladythrashers.com.

We'd love to see all the Nashville girls that weekend!

Thanks,
laura

I started playing hockey back in 1974. The first summer I went to a camp in LI run by the NY Islanders out of their practice facility. I had wanted to go to the Rangers camp, but they sent the camp brochure to Mr. Nancy Milholland. When I inquired at the Islanders camp, one of their staff, Ed Chadwick either called or wrote my parents, said they would be happy to have me , and suggested a session at which two other girls were going to attend. The first week I was at the camp, I was the only girl and most of the other kids were younger. I could barely skate and I was so nervous the first day that I threw up. I couldn't stop.

I had a few things going in my favor - I had a good wrist shot, I was not afraid to check, and I could do pushups. I was supported by the various Islanders and Islander personnel. However, there were some pretty foul mouthed obnoxious boys. One day during a drill, one kid (younger and shorter) spewed some particularly foul abuse while we were waiting in line for a drill. I hauled off and socked him in the face (this was back in the days before face shields - we only had external mouth guards). Funny thing, I did not hear a peep out of him after that. Over the next days I had more boys come up to me and say things like "I really think its cool you're playing hockey." I've certainly had other bouts of sexism, but that stands out in its satisfying resolution.

Cheers
Nancy
