Thanks for your patience in hearing about mink oiling goalie pads. I was able
to confirm from our friends at TPS that the recommendation for use would only
be for "real " leather pads and that there is concern that mink oil on
"synthetic" pads "may" cause some harm. The bottom line seems to be that it
is inevitable that pads which serve you well will fade, I guess we goalies can
view that as wearing a well deserved "badge" of honor!
Thanks to Theresa for her help!

UW Tie Ends Minnesota-Duluth*s 10-Game Win Streak

Middleton, Wis. - The women*s hockey Badgers (15-5-4, 9-4-4 WCHA) used special teams, including a short-handed and power-play goal, to tie second-ranked Minnesota-Duluth (19-4-2, 11-4-2) and snap the Bulldogs 10-game winning streak on Saturday at the Alliant Energy Center. Sophomore Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) led the offense for the Badgers with a goal and an assist in the contest.
*I thought it was a good battle game,* analyzed head coach Trina Bourget. *I think our special teams made the difference. Getting that short-handed goal gave us some momentum. We attacked them and didn*t give their power-play any time or space.*
The Bulldogs reached the scoreboard first, however, at 2:59 of the first period. Pamela Pachal intercepted a UW clearing attempt at the left point and beat a screened Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) when her shot banked off both posts and in.
Wisconsin*s Kerry Weiland took an interference penalty at 3:34 of the period and the short-handed Badgers took advantage. After Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) was stopped on one short-handed breakaway, Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) took a pass from Antony and scored on a short-handed breakaway with the backhand for her 32nd goal of the year. It came at the 5:12 mark.
UMD regained the lead at 13:21 of the period when Maria Rooth redirected a soft shot from Laurie Alexander along the left boards. The puck found its way just inside the right post, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead at the intermission.
Wisconsin evened the game at two on the power play at 10:12 of the second period. Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) slid the puck to Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Penn.) at the left point. Uliasz misfired on a shot, but the puck found its way to Kegley in the slot for the finish.
For the third time in the contest, UMD took a one-goal lead, this time at 12:16 of the second. Jessica Smith took a wrist open wrist shot in the slot on a rush that squirted between MacMillan*s legs. Before the goaltender could recover, Rooth found the lose puck and poked it home.
Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) evened the score for a third and final time at 17:53 of the second. Kegley stole the puck from the rushing Bulldogs just inside their own blue line, knocking the puck to Sikich, still on her way out of the zone. The forward*s first shot was stopped, but in the ensuing scramble, the puck found its way past UMD goalie Tuula Puputti.
Sikich had the best opportunity in overtime to end the contest early, but Puputti was up to stopping the UW*s fourth breakaway of the contest, preserving the 3-3 tie.
*I think we know we can play with them,* said Sikich. *We are happy we got a tie, but we*re also out there to win. No one is hanging their heads in the locker room. We played our hearts out.*
MacMillan now stands 13-5-4 after her 21-save performance. Puputti made 27 saves and is now 19-2-2.
The Badgers and Bulldogs look to decide their season series tomorrow at the Alliant Energy Center with faceoff at 1:05 p.m. Wisconsin and Minnesota-Duluth are 1-1-1 in the season series with UMD holding a two-point edge in league standings for second place.
