I'm not sure what the deal is, except possibly that people are waiting
for more competitive games. It'll be interesting to see what kind of crowd
there is today when Team Canada and Team USA are playing better teams at the
same site.
There has been some difficulty with the marketing of women's hockey
here in Minnesota this month. There are close to 10,000 registered female
players in this state, with most of them within easy driving distance to the
sites. There are around 3,000 female high school players in Minnesota. I was
at the NCAA Women's Frozen Four, and, even at the championship game, I doubt
there were 100 high school girls there. Clearly, there could have been some
serious marketing done to high school teams in February, before their seasons
ended, but this apparently wasn't done.

<< Well, as we all can tell, unless something major goes
wrong, it will be a US vs Canada final. My question
is, who do you think will win? >>

It's hard to say, since I haven't seen the Canadians, yet. They beat
Khazakstan 11-0. I did see Khazakstan in a pre-tournament game. They lost 6-3
to one of our local Community Olympic Developmental teams, composed of girls
who played at the highest level of High School competion this year. Many of
them will be D-1 recruits, (Renee Curtin, at least will be joining her sister
Rhonda at the University of Minnesota next year,) but still, it can't feel
good for the coach of a national team to lose to a bunch of 14-18-year-old
school-girls!

<< The Finns, who haven't looked as good as they have in the past, have a
big
game with the U.S., which has bowled over some very lackluster competition
in their first two games. >>

I have been very surprised at how the Finns have played. I saw both of
their first two games, (7-6 over China and 5-2 over Germany,) and I will be
surprised if their hold on 3rd place continues.

Looking forward to the rest of the tournament...

Team USA remains unscored-on. 9-0 vs Finland; 35-0 in the first three
games! It's been fun watching them. It's hard not to brag about the Minnesota
girls; there are six of them on the team; five of them played high school
hockey here. Jennie Schmidgall has been amazing considering she hasn't played
serious hockey all year!

I haven't seen them; the pool play has been at several sites, and they
haven't been at the same site as the US yet. It looks like I'll be watching
them Saturday against the US in the semifinals. Canada should have little
trouble with Finland in the other semifinal.

I saw Russia play the United States last Thursday. The
US won like 8-0 or something like that. The biggest
difference that I noticed was with the shots. USA has
much more power then Russia. Their skating wasn't too
bad, but once again, still nothing compared to USA and Canada.

Have you seen the Russians yet? An article on canoe.ca earlier in the week
said that the Finnish team is in a rebuilding year, aiming towards 2002.
