Thanks very much for the info. , Shawn. It really costs a lot to play. My
job pays little right now, plus, I have to support my mom too. So, I think
I really have to save up for some time. Then, I can play. I am thinking,
what time of the year do you usually start registaring to get into teams?
Early planning is always best, I think. Thanks again.

Subject:	Cost of Playing Hockey

Hockey is an expensive sport but it's oh, so worth it!

Playing costs vary greatly (as do equipment costs). In Colorado, I pay
$350 to play on a women's travel team. The $350 is for 1 hour of practice
per week, coached, and approximately 20 games from Oct-April. Team fees do
not cover any travel expenses but our travel is generally limited to day
trips and so expenses aren't so bad. Being an organizer for this team, I
know that $350 is NOT enough to cover team costs. We have to do
fundraisers to make up the difference.

I also play in the local in-house rec league. Fees for that are $320 for
23 games. That's 1 game/wk, no practices. So the $10-15/game figure that
was quoted earlier is about right in my experience.

Equipment costs, as was previously mentioned, do vary greatly. I paid $666
(yes, really, that was my total!) for absoulutely everything from the equip
bag to skates to tape. But I didn't consider cost (I had budgeted for this
BIG event) and bought what I liked. Friends have gotten used equipment or
borrowed and bought a little at a time and gotten away with as little as
$250.

The other hockey cost for me is clinics. But they are something you can
save up for or get as a Christmas gift. Clinics vary widely in price,
length, quality, etc.

So, save your money, get some stuff as gifts, borrow from friends, buy
used, do what ever it takes to play - it's well worth it!

Hi Karen,

I am curious. It's so much less costly. Where in the South do you mean?

Actually, it's about the same in the South. Our league-fee is cheaper
($300), but we have only a 20 week schedule (10 official games, 4-6
scrimmages (timer, no officials), and 4-6 practices).

When we have other ice times, it's about $13/time.

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if this get through so I am sending it again:

I think it depends on your location. I think in Canada and the East coast,
ice time may be cheaper than the rest of the U.S. because Canada has a lot
more rinks. I am in Southern California so I'm probably in the most
expensive place to play.

I pay approximately $400.00 per season for an in-house, recreational league
per season. This includes 20 games, plus playoffs. This does not include
any practice ice time. Also, there is a $25.00 USA hockey memebership
fee per year that you have to have for insurance reasons.

If you do not have any equiptment yet, you are looking at between $200.00 -
$800.00 depending on if you get used equiptment or new. Also, you could
spend even more if you get the hottest, newest, flahiest, etc...
equiptment.) If you are new to the sport, I would suggest buying used
except for a helmet and skates. Good fitting skates are eccential to have a
good experience on the ice. A poorly fitting skate or one that has been
broken in too far, may drive you away from the sport.

If you decide to play for a travel team, then you are getting into a very
serious committment for money. Travel expenses, hotels, rental car and food
can add up to several thousand dollars at the elite level.

But if you want to play recreational hockey on an in-house team, you can
expect between $10 to $20 per game to play.

I think it's totally worth it. I just eat at home more often. :)

most teams often do fundraisers to help pay for it and whatnot. Ah well.

THIS WEEK: The University of Wisconsin (5-1-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) heads east
to face national powers Harvard (0-0-0) and Brown (0-0-0). The Badgers
play at Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., at Bright Hockey Center at 1 p.m.
CST on Saturday, Nov. 4. The UW then travels to Providence, R.I., to
face Brown at Meehan Auditorium at 1 p.m. CST, Sunday, Nov. 5.

BADGER Rankings: One week after reaching its highest ranking at No.
6, the Badger women's hockey team slipped a spot to No. 7 in the U.S.
College Hockey Online Poll, despite sweeping St. Cloud State.
Wisconsin dropped behind New Hampshire, who climbed with a sweep over
then-No. 10 Ohio State.
In the American Hockey Magazine Poll released Oct. 24, the
Badgers also ranked seventh. Both polls have Dartmouth as the No. 1
team in the country.

THE HEAD HUNTER: Frosh Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) continues
her torrid scoring pace and now leads the nation with 15 points. The
center posted back-to-back five-point games against St. Cloud State
last weekend. Included in the 10 points were Hunter's first two career
hat tricks and the first two of the season for the Badgers. In
Friday's contest, Hunter had three goals, two assists, six shots
and was +5 for the game. On Saturday, the frosh notched her first
game-winning goal and recorded a natural hat trick with three goals in
a 6:06 span of the second period. She also added two assists in the
game, registered seven shots and was a +4.
Hunter scored or assisted on 10 of the UW's 12 goals over the
weekend and now leads the WCHA and the country in goals (11),
power-play goals (5), and freshman scoring (11-4=15), and shares the
lead in power-play points (5-1=6). In strictly WCHA contests, she
leads in goals (8) and power-play goals (4), ranks second in frosh
scoring (8-4=12), and shares second in overall points (12) and
power-play points (4-1=5).

ET TU BRUTE?: Not to be outdone by her Canadian brethren, Yorkton,
Sask., native Kendra Antony put together a seven-point weekend with
four goals and three assists against St. Cloud State. The sophomore
scored the first goal in both games, recording two goals and an assist
on Friday and two goals and two assists, Sunday. Antony put four shots
on goal and was +5 on Friday and hit the target seven times while
going +4 on Saturday.
The Badgers' top scorer as a frosh, Antony ranks second on the
squad and shares fifth in the conference with 12 points. The wing
shares second in the conference with seven assists and fifth with five
goals. Antony has points in all six Badger contests this season.

POINT! WISCONSIN: Defenseman Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) posted
two multi-point games this past weekend against St. Cloud State. On
Friday, the sophomore collected two assists. She then scored her first
goal of the season, a power-play goal from the point, and added an
assist on the game's first goal.
Weiland shares third on the team with six points and her five
assists rank second on the squad. She also shares third in defense
scoring among all conference defenders in all games.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: Through six games of the 2000-01 season, the
women's hockey team has scored first in every game. Kendra Antony
scored the first goal in both games this past weekend against St.
Cloud. Meghan Hunter did the same against Minnesota-Duluth the second
series of the season as well as in the Badgers' first game of the
season against Mercyhurst. Steph Millar (Hudson, Wis.) scored the
first UW goal in the Badgers' other game against Mercyhurst.

SCOUTING HARVARD: Fifth-ranked Harvard University begins its season
when it plays host to the Badgers this weekend. The Crimson went
21-5-3 in 1999-00, finishing second in the ECAC and the Ivy League.
Harvard returns three of its top four scorers, but will be
without the service of two of the three as Tammy Shewchuk and Jennifer
Botterill prepare to play for Team Canada at the Four Nations Cup in
Salt Lake City, Utah. The loss of Shewchuk and Botterill open the door
for Angie Francisco who returns after a 50-point season. Harvard's top
defender returning is Jamie Hagerman, who recorded 4-11=15 last year
as a frosh. Harvard's top defender, Angela Ruggiero (21-33=54) is away
for the year training with the U.S. National Team.
In goal, Alison Kuusisto returns as the Crimson's most
experienced netminder after going 4-2-0 with a 2.58 GAA and .888 save
percentage in nine games last year.
Katey Stone (New Hampshire, 1989) leads Harvard for the
seventh season. Stone has helped Harvard to a 99-68-6 in the six
previous years, including a national title in the 1998-99 season.

BADGERS AGAINST THE CRIMSON: The Badgers hosted then-No. 1 Harvard
last season at the Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, Wis. The Badgers
held a 1-0 lead into the third period, before the Crimson struck for
three unanswered goals and a 3-1 win. Kendra Antony scored the Badgers
goal in the game.

SCOUTING BROWN: Fourth-ranked Brown University (0-0-0) will host the
Badgers on Sunday at 1 p.m. CST. Brown begins its season against
Minnesota on Saturday. The Bears won an exhibition contest with
current Badger Karen Rickard's (Bowmanville, Ont.) former team, the
North York Junior Aeros this past weekend, 4-1.
Brown's top returning scorer is Kim Insalaco, who had 10 goals
and 17 assists last season. After Insalaco, the Bears will look to
Christina Sorbara (10-15=25) and Kristy Zamora (12-9=21) for scoring
punch.
On the blue line, Tara Mounsey left for the U.S. National
Team, so Cara Gardner (0-11=11) and Cassie Turner (0-9=9) return as
the team's top returning defenseman.
In goal, Brown must replace Kazmaier Award-winning goaltender
Ali Brewer, who has graduated and moved on to the U.S. National Team.
Pam Dreyer returns for her second season after seeing action in four
games in 1999-00. She will compete for playing time with frosh Katie
Germain, who comes from the Bluewater Hawks, the same former team as
current Badger Meghan Hunter.
Digit Murphy (Cornell, 1983) is in her 12th year as head coach
for Brown and sports a 185-74-23 mark during her tenure. Murphy led
the Bears to a national runner-up finish in 1999-00, and ECAC regular
season and tournament titles with a 25-4-3 record.

BADGERS AGAINST THE BEARS: The Badgers played host to Brown last year
at the Kohl Center, falling to the Bears 3-2. Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire,
Wis.) and Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) were the UW goal
scorers, as the UW twice trailed by two goals, but failed to come all
the way back. The Badgers outshot the Bears 42-23 in the contest but
were shut down by former Brown goalie Ali Brewer.

The Leaders of the pack: After spending the 1999-00 season with a
rotating captain system, the Badgers have settled on junior forward
Michelle Sikich and sophomore forward Sis Paulsen as team co-captains.
Sikich is the only three-year college player on the Wisconsin roster,
while Paulsen was the 1999-00 team MVP and one of the two Badger
representatives on last season's All-WCHA First Team.

Important websites: Check out www.collegehockeystats.com for the
latest box scores and statistics in women's ice hockey from around the
country. The Badgers have launched their new website at
www.uwbadgers.com. The WCHA will soon be unveiling a new website
design at www.wcha.com.

UPCOMING: The Badgers travel to Columbus, Ohio for a weekend series
with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Wisconsin plays OSU on Friday and
Saturday, Nov. 4-5 at 6:05 p.m. CST at OSU Ice Arena.
