You guys are making me really happy I live and play in Ithaca NY! My women's team pays $220 for the season (October to March), but that's only one ice time a week. My son's travel team is $650 for the season (2 practices and at least 2 games a week), plus tournaments and motels. The adult league is $225 for 2 games a week. I always knew better than to complain, because hockey is so much fun and good exercise it's worth the expense, but now I'll have to feel grateful it's so cheap here!

Our team is now defunct BUT our fees were around $550 a year. That included
one practice (it was at 9:30 PM and ALL we could get due to youth hockey)
and games on weekend. We included hotels and gas in that figure. Regarding
gas we had quite a few girls who chip in $5 no matter how far the games
were. So what we did is if you took more than 2 people with you, you saved
your receipts and were reimbursed. We never did find a way that everyone
agreed on as far as payment. We did it monthly and we still had peole who
didn't pay. We did it as a lump sum (with 4 months to raise the money) and
people griped. Go figure. We did offer plenty of opportunity for
fundraisers. If you sold ads for our program 80% went to your fees. If you
helped with a fundraiser (we sold brats & hot dogs, car washes, ect) the
money was divided among those who attended. It was always the same 4 people
but guess who didn't complain about the money? Those 4 people! Anyway,
that's my 2 cents.

Hi Louise,

I think $295CDN is about the loweset cost I heard so far. It's good that
it's including both practices and games. How many games per season? May I
ask where your league is? I am pretty interested.

Thanks very much.

Our organization charges $295CDN for a season of girls' house league (about
20 weeks of a practice and a game every week), with opportunities to recoup
some of the cost by working bingos or helping with other fundraising.
That's probably about half to two-thirds of the cost per player - the rest
is covered by bingos and other fundraising. (If this sounds low, our ice
time - all in municipal facilities - is approximately $100CDN per hour.)

For families who want more hockey than that (playing on a select team in
the next-older house league, going to tournaments, etc), it can get quite a
bit more expensive.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for the information on the cost of playing. It sounds
expensive. Should I think of it as about $10-20 CDN per game? I found an
Old-Timers hockey league. They cost about $350 CDN for 26 games and 1
clinic every week. It's for old rusty players and also new beginners like
me, although I may be the youngest if I go. Anyway, I am thinking of a
cheaper way. I want to get started and keep learning at the same time. Is
there any way that I can get into hockey without being in a league or avoid
the high cost?

I think skating lessons would be good for me. Hope they are not too
expensive. Maybe some pick-up hockey if I can find some.

I am going to recalculate my budget though. Maybe I can squeeze some money
so that I can afford the high cost.

Thanks very much. Any more suggestions are more than welcome.

Hi,

I am looking for a womens team in No. California. I'm a goalie who started
playing a few months ago. I play on 3 men's teams (includeing a second
division team) at Rollin Ice in San Jose, CA. I'd be interested in joining
a Women's team, but I don't know any contacts for teams or leagues.

That one is a girls' association (up to Intermediate / age 20). It's
located in Kingston, Ontario. As I said, it's for a season of about 20
weeks of a game and a practice every week.

Hockey is an expensive sport but it's oh, so worth it!

Playing costs vary greatly (as do equipment costs). In Colorado, I pay
$350 to play on a women's travel team. The $350 is for 1 hour of practice
per week, coached, and approximately 20 games from Oct-April. Team fees do
not cover any travel expenses but our travel is generally limited to day
trips and so expenses aren't so bad. Being an organizer for this team, I
know that $350 is NOT enough to cover team costs. We have to do
fundraisers to make up the difference.

I also play in the local in-house rec league. Fees for that are $320 for
23 games. That's 1 game/wk, no practices. So the $10-15/game figure that
was quoted earlier is about right in my experience.

Equipment costs, as was previously mentioned, do vary greatly. I paid $666
(yes, really, that was my total!) for absoulutely everything from the equip
bag to skates to tape. But I didn't consider cost (I had budgeted for this
BIG event) and bought what I liked. Friends have gotten used equipment or
borrowed and bought a little at a time and gotten away with as little as $250.

The other hockey cost for me is clinics. But they are something you can
save up for or get as a Christmas gift. Clinics vary widely in price,
length, quality, etc.

So, save your money, get some stuff as gifts, borrow from friends, buy
used, do what ever it takes to play - it's well worth it!

Just to continue the thread, here in Victoria Debbie plays for the (Senior
Rec) Stingers. She pays $300 (Canadian) per season
for which she gets three ice slots a week (two practices, one game or two
games, one practice). Plus away games against local teams from Juan de Fuca,
Canadian Armed Forces, Sidney, Mill Bay, Saanich, Sooke (average of one away
game a week). It's a large group of all skill levels, people are phoned in
turn for games. If you're available, you get a lot of ice time.

Is it a women's league, or a mostly men's league? If the latter, would it
bother you to be both one of the weakest and one of the only women? Some
of the men's "old-timers" hockey that I've seen and played in is of quite a
high calibre, viewed from a new skater's perspective. If you are thinking
of something like this, it would be wise to go look at it before committing
yourself.

Do you have skates and equipment yet? I would say get skates first -
people here have lots of good advice about what to look for - so you can
start learning to skate, and start keeping your eyes open for used equipment.

Actually, it's about the same in the South. Our league-fee is cheaper ($300), but we have only a 20 week schedule (10 official games, 4-6 scrimmages (timer, no officials), and 4-6 practices).

When we have other ice times, it's about $13/time.

I'm not sure if this get through so I am sending it again:

I think it depends on your location. I think in Canada and the East coast, ice time may be cheaper than the rest of the U.S. because Canada has a lot more rinks. I am in Southern California so I'm probably in the most
expensive place to play.

I pay approximately $400.00 per season for an in-house, recreational league per season. This includes 20 games, plus playoffs. This does not include any practice ice time. Also, there is a $25.00 USA hockey memebership
fee per year that you have to have for insurance reasons.

If you do not have any equiptment yet, you are looking at between $200.00 - $800.00 depending on if you get used equiptment or new. Also, you could spend even more if you get the hottest, newest, flahiest, etc...
equiptment.) If you are new to the sport, I would suggest buying used except for a helmet and skates. Good fitting skates are eccential to have a good experience on the ice. A poorly fitting skate or one that has been
broken in too far, may drive you away from the sport.

If you decide to play for a travel team, then you are getting into a very serious committment for money. Travel expenses, hotels, rental car and food can add up to several thousand dollars at the elite level.

But if you want to play recreational hockey on an in-house team, you can expect between $10 to $20 per game to play.

I think it's totally worth it. I just eat at home more often. :)

Hunter Carries Badgers to 6-2 Women"s Hockey Win

Madison, Wis. - Frosh Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) notched her first career hat trick and added two assists to lead the sixth-ranked women"s hockey Badgers to a 6-2 win over St. Cloud State at the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum on Friday. Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) chipped in two goals to aid the Badger offense.
The Badgers and Huskies were knotted at one at the first intermission. Antony got the Badgers and the game going with a goal at 12:51 of the first. Hunter flipped the puck ahead to Antony after Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) won the puck along the boards deep in her own zone.
St. Cloud State evened the score at one at 15:05 when Kobi Kawamoto stole the puck at her own blue line and finished a short-handed breakaway.
*I think St. Cloud came ready to play,* said interim head coach Trina Bourget. *We were kind of a little slow getting started, but once we got our feet going we played well and better as a team.*
The Badger took the lead for good 12:14 into the second period when Hunter scored her first of the night, extending her goal and point-scoring streak to five games. Gretchen Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) made the play, rushing end-to-end before finding Hunter in the slot. Hunter faked SCSU goaltender Laura Gieselman and backhanded a shot into the net.
*Gretchen Anderson had a great game,* commented Bourget. *She stepped up for us on defense and had a really nice rush and a great pass to set up Meghan Hunter for the second goal.*
Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Penn.) extended the UW lead to 3-1, receiving a pass from Steph Millar (Hudson, Wis.) and shooting past a sprawled SCSU goalie at 14:33.
In the third, Hunter would complete her hat trick with a power-play tally from Weiland at 12:14 and a goal in the last minute. She would first assist on the Badgers" fifth goal at 15:17 that came from the stick of Antony. Hunter sent Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) into the St. Cloud zone and Antony converted Sikich"s rebound for the goal.
The Huskies scored at 16:46 to make it a 5-2 game when Rachel Denner wristed a shot past UW goaltender Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) from the high slot. Briana Munyon got the assist.
Wisconsin would close out the scoring when Hunter scored her third of the game and eighth of the season at 19:37. Hunter and Antony worked a give-and-go on a two-on-one for the score.
*A great night for Meghan Hunter/ being a part of five of the six goals,* Bourget said. *She just dominates out there and is a great leader on and off the ice.*
MacMillan made 19 saves and improved to 4-1-0 with the win. Gieselman stopped 30 shots in the loss for St. Cloud.
The Badgers (4-1-0, 2-1-0 WCHA) go for their second sweep of the season when they play host to the Huskies (2-3-0, 2-3-0) tomorrow at 2:05 p.m., at the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum.
