MINNESOTA-DULUTH TO HOST ST. LAWRENCE IN 2000-01 SEASON OPENER THIS WEEKEND

THE GAMES: The University of Minnesota-Duluth women's hockey team will host
St. Lawrence University on Friday (Oct.13) at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday at
7:05 p.m. at Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC). This
non-conference series will open UMD's 2000-2001 season.

THE RECORDS: Last season UMD captured the Western Collegiate Hockey
Association (WCHA) regular season title with 21-1-2 record (25-5-3 overall).
It followed that up with a league playoff championship, before advancing to
the AWCHA (American Women's College Hockey Alliance) National Championship
Tour-nament.
The St. Lawrence Saints finished 11-12-1 overall and in seventh place in the
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) with a 18-15-1 record.

THE SERIES: This series will be the second meeting between these two schools
in collegiate competition. The first time UMD squared off against St.
Lawrence was at the Lake Placid Tournament, NY (Jan 22) and won 3-1.

COACH MILLER: Shannon Miller, the 1999-2000 WCHA Coach of the Year, returns
for her second year as head coach after leading UMD to a 25-5-3 record and a
berth in the Final Four.
Miller, 36, has spent the greater part of the 1990's as a coach with the
Canadian Hockey Association. She directed Canada to a silver medal in women'
s ice hockey at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. Prior to her stint with
Canada at the last Olympics in Nagano, Japan, Miller was the head coach of
Canada's national team which captured a fourth consecutive gold medal at the
1997 Women's World Ice Hockey Championships. She also coached Canada to
gold-medal finishes at both the 1995 and 1996 Pacific Rim Championships as
well as the Three Nations Cup tournament in 1996. Miller launched her
national coaching career as an assistant with the Alberta Women's Hockey
Team (18 and under) in 1989 and two years later was part of a club, which
captured a gold medal in the first-ever ice hockey competition for women in
the Canada Winter Games. In 1992 and 1994 she served as an assistant coach
for Canada's gold-medal winning World Championship teams.
A native of Melfort, Saskatchewan, Miller competed in four Canadian National
Championships as a player (1982-85) before retiring in 1989. She holds a
bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Saskatchewan
(1985) and from 1988-96 was employed as a police officer in Calgary,
Alberta. She's been a volunteer member of the Canadian Hockey Association
Female Council, president of the Southern Alberta Women's Hockey League and
chairperson of the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League in addition to
refereeing hockey three years (1982-85) at the collegiate level. After the
1998 Olympics, Miller was given the prestigious Canadian Advancement of
Women in Sport Award, for her groundbreaking successes for female sports in
Canada.
Miller is also serving on the first ever NCAA women's hockey committee,
which plan to organize and operate the women's Final Four.

Joining Miller on the coaching staff are Stacy Wilson, Shawna Davidson and
Manon Rheaume as a volunteer goalie coach.

COACH FLANAGAN: Paul Flanagan enters his second season as the head coach of
the Saints. In his first year, he led St. Lawrence to an 18-15-1 overall
record. The 18 wins were the most in the history of the women's program.
1999-2000 was also the first time since the 1993-94 season that the Saints
finished with record over .500.
Before taking over as the women's head coach, Flanagan was an assistant with
the St. Lawrence men's team for 11 seasons.

THE BROADCAST: This season all Bulldogs games will be broadcast on 96 Lite
(95.7 FM). The play by play announcer is Tom Hansen with former Bulldog
forward Erin Nagurski providing the color commentary.

BULLDOG PREVIEW: The 2000-2001 version of the University of Minnesota-Duluth
Bulldogs women's hockey team is back after taking the women's college hockey
world by storm in their inaugural season a year ago. The Bulldogs wasted no
time in establishing themselves as one of the premier programs in the nation
last winter by capturing the Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular
season title with a 21-1-2 record (25-5-3 overall) and following that up
with a league playoff championship. For their efforts, the team was
rewarded with a trip to the 2000 AWCHA championships in Boston, where they
placed fourth.
Guiding UMD in their quest for a WCHA title repeat and a berth in the
first-ever NCAA championship will be last year's WCHA Coach of the Year,
Shannon Miller. Miller, a former coach of the Canadian Olympic Team led
the team to a 25-5-3 overall record in her first year of coaching women's
college hockey. Her leadership is evidenced by the outstanding production
of her team. The Bulldogs pieced together a 23-game unbeaten streak
(21-0-2) to begin the year. They were tops in the nation in power play
goals (43) and second in goals scored (196). Miller is obviously enthused
about the team's prospects for the 2000-01 season. "We head into our second
season with a strengthened roster and a ton of enthusiasm." She says,
"Players uniting from five countries, proudly representing the UMD Bulldogs,
with clear goals in mind. This is a great story of a unique team that wants
to write their own ending."
The Bulldogs are confident that some new additions will compensate for a
couple of key losses from last year's team. One of those missing from the
1999-2000 roster includes the WCHA Player of the Year and NCAA scoring
leader, Jenny Schmidgall who is expecting her first child in January.
The Bulldogs are still encouraged by the return of 19 players (12 forwards,
5 defensemen, 2 goalies) from last year's squad that includes sophomore
Maria Rooth, last year's WCHA Rookie of the Year. The All WCHA first-team
member contributed 37 goals and 31 assists for 68 points as a freshman, good
for fifth in the nation. The winger terrorized the opposition, netting four
hat tricks on the season. Rooth's line mate, Erika Holst (24-24=48) will
return with an unmatched physical presence combined with a knack for finding
the net. The Bulldogs will also look to Hanne Sikio (27-25=37) to maintain
her superb and consistent offensive production from a year ago. A
pacesetter on the UMD power play, Sikio amassed a 23-game point streak
during the 1999-2000 season. Sikio's deft scoring touch coupled with her
bullet slap shot will mean she will be showcased as a forward and a
defenseman for the Bulldogs this year. UMD will also look to a pair of
sparkplugs -- Michelle McAteer (16-10=26) and Jenny Hempel (6-3=9) -- to
provide an offensive charge for the team. They will be aided by Joanne
Eustace (7-11=18), Laurie Alexander (3-6=9) and Jessi Flink (5-5=10). All
are returning from last year's team and all provided tenacious two-way
ability.
Helping to keep the opposition off the board, the Bulldogs return a solid
core of defensemen who helped hold opponents to a paltry 1.74 goals per game
average. Leading the 'Dogs' will be senior captain Brittny Ralph, whose
nine goals and 22 assists for 31 points was tops among all Bulldog
defensemen. Helping Ralph at the point will be Navada Russell (5-24=29) and
Pamela Pachal (3-21=24), specialists at the transition game.
The Bulldogs will be backstopped by their No. 1 goalie from a year ago,
sophomore Tuula Puputti. The former Finnish National team starter was
instrumental in the Bulldog's championship run of a year ago. In her 13
games as a starter, Puputti posted a 1.62 goals against average, a
team-leading .936 save percentage, and three shutouts. Providing relief for
Puputti is newcomer, Patricia Sautter (Schaffhausen, Switzerland), a member
of the Swiss National Team for the last five years.
In addition to Sautter, the Bulldogs have added two forwards and two
defensemen to strengthen their roster. Sheena Podovinnikoff (Kamsack, SASK)
and Sanna Peura (Jyvaskyla, Finland) will help to spearhead an already
potent offense. Tricia Guest (Estevan, SASK) and (Oulu, Finland) will
bolster the defensive corps.

UP NEXT: Following this weekend's non-conference games, the Bulldogs will
host the University of Wisconsin (Oct. 20-21) in their WCHA openers at the
DECC.

Responding to Maggie's request for goalie 'balance drills', I'd like to refer
you all to this e-mail address: email@hidden . This past summer, I was
lucky enough to participate in an all female (Joe Bertagna) Goalie Camp just
outside of Boston. Participating goalies where Kelly Dyer, Erin Whitten and
Sara DeCosta who put us through our paces and to improve conditioning and
balance, they enlisted the help of a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning
Specialist, Marti Shea-Geissler.
Marti's company, Select Fitness, is currently working on a website for all of
you not local to the Boston area (Marblehead, Ma), but in the interim, you can
contact her at the above address. I do not have the best balance and found the
drills she and her staff presented very helpful...hope this resource can help
you!

CORRECTION TO UMD STATS:

Because a goal scored on the exact end of a penalty is NOT
a power-play goal, Pamela Pachal's goal wasn't power play goal.

La Toya Clarke assisted on all three as Minnesota opened the 2000-01 season
with a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud State.
Despite being outshot 10-9 in the opening period, the Gophers got on the
board first when Thomas knocked in a rebound from Laura Slominski seven
minutes, 22 seconds into the game.
Thomas gave her team a 2-0 lead just 1:20 into the second period but the
Huskies Ricki-Lee Doyle scored a power-play goal just 40 seconds later to
cut the lead in half.
The scored remained that way until late in the game when Thomas completed
her hat trick with 2:56 to play. Tracy Engstrom scored at 18:53 of the
period to close out the scoring.
After being outshot in the opening 20 minutes, Minnesota had a 30-14
advantage in shots on goal over the next two periods, outshooting its hosts

Freshmen Lead Badgers To Season-Opening Win

Madison, Wis. - Freshman forward Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) netted the first two goals of the season for the Badgers, while freshman defender Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Penn.) added her first as Wisconsin defeated Mercyhurst College, 5-3, at the Kohl Center on Saturday. Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) also chipped in a goal and an assist in the victory.
Hunter opened the scoring at the 9:43 mark when she took the puck off the boards at her own blue line and carried it below the Laker goal line. She skated in front, held her shot, and beat a sprawled out Amber Natali top shelf.
The Lakers evened the score at 16:46 when K.C. Gallo found a loose puck in the slot on the power play that deflected from teammate Seanna Murphy*s stick. Hunter and Wisconsin regained the lead early in the second on a two-player advantage beating Natali with a wrister from the slot. Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) were credited with the assists.
Uliasz made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal at 10:35 of the second after winning the puck at the red line and taking it the rest of the way. But Gallo brought the Lakers back within one before the period expired, banking in a shot from the side of the net off a UW defender at 19:12.
Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) got the Badger returners into the action, converting Antony*s pass from behind the goal for a 4-2 UW lead. Mercyhurst would not go away and climbed within one goal again with Christy Vinge*s tally at 7:09 of the third.
Antony finally put the game away at the 16:33 mark of the final stanza, pouncing on a Karen Rickard (Bowmanville, Ont.) rebound off the post. Rickard got her shot after stealing the puck in the high slot from a Laker defender.
Badger goaltender Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) faced 19 shots and stopped 14 on the way to the victory. Natali stopped 28 shots while absorbing the loss for the Lakers.
*It is tougher when you get flashes of shots and they come at different periods of the game,* said MacMillan. * My team did a great job of playing defense and keeping the shots to the outside. It made easy on me out there tonight.*
The Badgers (1-0-0) return to the ice on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at the Kohl Center to complete their two-game series with Mercyhurst (0-1-0).

Millar Breaks Scoreless Tie For Women*s Hockey Win

Madison, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin and Mercyhurst College played over 57 minutes of scoreless hockey before freshman forward Steph Millar (Hudson, Wis.) converted a two-on-one pass from Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) as the Badgers went on to a 2-0 win at the Kohl Center on Sunday. Frosh Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) added the second goal with an empty-netter at 19:35 to seal the win.
The Lakers held a 17-16 lead in shots through two periods and had the best scoring chance of the game. On a power play midway through the second, Mercyhurst broke in on a two-on-none, but pushed a shot wide right of the goal.
But in what seemed like a game destined for extra time, Millar finally put a notch on the scoreboard. At 17:09, Kegley won the puck along the left boards and spotted a cutting Millar in the high slot. Kegley fed the frosh, who then beat Laker goaltender Tiffany Ribble with a wrist shot.
Hunter took advantage of a vacant Mercyhurst goal with 25.8 seconds on the scoreboard for her third tally of the weekend. Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) and Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Penn.) assisted on the score.
Goaltenders Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) and Ribble battled in their respective creases with MacMillan earning the shutout for the UW with 25 saves. Ribble stopped 26 shots in her first action of the season. MacMillan improves to 2-0-0, while Ribble drops to 0-1-0.
*It really was a team effort,* said head coach Trina Bourget. *We have really stressed defense. And it isn*t just your goalie and defensemen, it*s your forwards getting back and back checking and everyone working in your own zone. We limited them to shots from the outside, which means our players are doing their jobs in the defensive zone.*
Wisconsin (2-0-0) travels to open its conference season at Minnesota-Duluth (2-0-0) next weekend. The Badgers and Bulldogs play Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20-21 at 7:05 p.m.
*We are two evenly matched teams,* said Bourget. *I am very pleased with the weekend and how our players performed. It was a benchmark for where we are and where we need to be. It*s early in the season and we still have a lot to learn, but I think we have a good starting point from which to build.*

I'm curious about the story behind this press release.

This sounds like there had been some dispute over the players' contracts -
otherwise, why on earth would this be news? It also sounds like maybe the
players were refusing to practice until the negotiations were complete. Is
this true? Is it a first for women's hockey? Is it a first for
US-government funded female athletes? Are the terms of the agreement public?

Louise,

this week: The University of Wisconsin (2-0-0) travels to defending league champion Minnesota-Duluth (2-0-0) for each team"s first conference series of the year. The Badgers and Bulldogs skate on Friday, Oct. 20 and Saturday, Oct. 21 at 7:05 p.m. at the DECC in Duluth, Minn.

Practice times: Wisconsin shifts practice to The Shell this week from Monday to Wednesday between 3-6 p.m. Please contact Paul Capobianco at 608-263-1983 for all media requests.

Hunting season: Freshman center Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) exploded onto the scene with an impressive debut for the Badgers. Hunter scored the first two goals of the season for Wisconsin, including one on the power play this past Saturday against Mercyhurst. Hunter returned Sunday, adding an empty-net goal to seal the UW"s 2-0 win and series sweep.
Hunter leads the Badgers and shares the WCHA lead with three goals. She also leads the team with 12 shots and shares the team lead with three points.

FRESH PRODUCTION: Half of Wisconsin"s 14 points over the weekend came from the stick of first-year Badgers. Meghan Hunter collected three goals, Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Penn.) added a goal and an assist, Karen Rickard (Bowmanville, Ont.) had an assist, and Steph Millar (Hudson, Wis.) scored a game-winning goal.
Hunter and Uliasz accounted for all the Badgers power-play goals, with each finding the net with the player advantage in Sunday"s contest. Hunter"s goal came on a five-on-three, while Uliasz scored four minutes later on a five-on-four.

NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP: The Badger sophomores, including two All-WCHA First-Team players and an All-WCHA Second-Team player, scored six of the UW"s 14 points. Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) led the way with a goal and two assists. Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) set up game two"s game-winning goal, and Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) and Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) each garnered power-play assists.

NO-GOAL ZONE: Wisconsin sophomore goaltender Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) earned the Badgers" first shut out of the season with a 25-save performance against Mercyhurst on Sunday. With the perfect game, MacMillan lowered her goals against to a paltry 1.50 and raised her save percentage to .929. MacMillan made 14 saves in a 5-3 win on Saturday, and starts the season 2-0-0. She raises her career record to 15-6-1.

Scouting minnesota-duluth: The University of Minnesota-Duluth (2-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) entertains Wisconsin at the DECC in Duluth, Minn., this week, as both teams open conference play. The Bulldogs enter the series after a home sweep of St. Lawrence University, 7-0 and 4-3. Maria Rooth notched her first hat trick of the season in the season-opener. Erika Holst scored twice in game two to help the Bulldogs complete the sweep.
Six players from the national teams of Finland, Sweden and Switzerland grace the Bulldog roster, while a seventh skated for the Finnish Junior National Team. 1999-00 WCHA Rookie of the Year Rooth leads the Bulldog offense, along with fellow Swede Holst and the Finnish Hanne Sikio. Finland"s Tuula Puputti plays goal for UMD and is backed up by Team Switzerland"s Patricia Sautter. Sanna Peura (Finland) and Satu Kiipeli (Finland Jr.) round out UMD"s European flavor.
UMD, the defending WCHA regular season and conference tournament champions, lost just once in the 1999-00 conference season. The Bulldogs won all four meetings with the Badgers, including the first two games in both teams" varsity histories.
Shannon Miller heads the Bulldogs from the bench. Miller, a 1985 University of Saskatchewan graduate, sports a 27-5-3 mark at the reigns of the Bulldogs. Miller, the former Canadian National Team Coach, is in her second year with UMD.

BADGERS AGAINST THE BULLDOGS: Kendra Antony has been a Bulldog killer for Wisconsin, scoring all three goals against UMD in last year"s season-opening series and registering her lone career hat trick at Duluth last January 14. Antony has four career power-play goals against UMD.
Badger goaltender Jackie MacMillan faced the Bulldogs just once last year, but stopped a career-high 50 shots in an opening night loss at the Kohl Center.
UW goalie Jen Neary (Dallas, Texas) also set a career-high in saves against the Bulldogs with 44 on January 14.

Head coach trina bourget: Trina Bourget takes over the reigns for the second-year Badgers as interim head coach after spending the UW"s inaugural campaign as the team"s top assistant. The Shrewsbury, Mass., native arrived in Madison in the summer of 1999 after a successful two-year stay as head coach of Division III Sacred Heart University. Named the 1998*99 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference/Koho Coach of the Year, she led the Pioneers, in their third year of existence, to a No. 8 national ranking. Their 15-4-3 record during the 1998*99 season, good for second in the ECAC, earned Bourget American Women"s Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year Runner-up honors.
Bourget"s most recent coaching experience came this past summer when she joined the coaching ranks of USA Hockey. She served as co-coach of the USA Hockey Junior Olympic Development Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y.
A 1994 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Bourget owns a bachelor of science degree in family and consumer studies. Bourget competed as a forward and defenseman for the University of New Hampshire women"s hockey team where she helped the Wildcats to the ECAC Division I Championship in 1991, and runners-up finishes 1992 and 1993.
A former referee, Bourget brings a great understanding of all aspects of the game. She spent over 11 years in the official"s stripes and received her *B* Pool license from the International Ice Hockey Federation. She also achieved the status of a USA Hockey Level 4 official. Bourget worked games involving the U.S. National Team, the Norwegian Women"s National Team, as well as three U.S. Girls" and Women"s National Tournaments from 1997-99. At the 1996 Women"s Select Officials Camp held in Lake Placid, N.Y., Bourget earned Most Dedicated Official as voted on by her peers.

The Leaders of the pack: After spending the 1999-00 season with a rotating captain system, the Badgers have settled on junior forward Michelle Sikich and sophomore forward Sis Paulsen as team co-captains. Sikich is the only three-year college player on the Wisconsin roster, while Paulsen was the 1999-00 team MVP and one of the two Badger representatives on last season"s All-WCHA First Team.

Important websites: Check out www.collegehockeystats.com for the latest box scores and statistics in women"s ice hockey from around the country. The Badgers have launched their new website at www.uwbadgers.com. The WCHA will soon be unveiling a new website design at www.wcha.com.

GOPHERS FINISH SWEEP OF HUSKIES WITH 5-4 WIN

Laura Slominski scored three goals and Minnesota collected four power-play
goals en route to a 5-4 win and series sweep of St. Cloud State.

The Gophers, who had outscored the Huskies 50-4 in six previous meetings
before the weekend, were unable to shake their guests, despite twice leading
by two goals.

Rachel Denner's power-play goal six minutes into the opening period gave St.
Cloud State an early lead but Slominski, at 19:04, and Nadine Muzerall, at
19:56, scored in the final minute of the opening period to give Minnesota a
2-1 lead.

Slominski scored twice in the second period to set a school record with
three power-play goals in a game, but Amanda Mathison and Kobi Kawamoto both
scored to keep the Huskies within a goal.

Fiona McLeod's power-play goal 4:24 into the final period then tied the
score with St. Cloud State's lone even-strength goal of the game.

Ronda Curtin got the game-winner for the Gophers on the power-play with 8:44
to play when she converted a Bethany Petersen rebound.

Minnesota had a commanding 38-20 advantage in shots on goal. Laura Gieselman
stopped 33 shots for St. Cloud State while Minnesota's Erica Killewald made
16 saves.

Folks --

Laurie and I are very proud to announce that we've have created a new
home for all of our hockey resources, including our mailling lists.
That site is HockeyFanz.com and is now
open for your use.

HockeyFanz.com has been in development for over a year -- it was
conceived as a way to expand beyond our mailing lists and create an
entire on-line community for hockey people. On top of the lists, we
now have online forums, which gives us the ability to cover many more
things than lists do, and create topical and specialty discussions in
a way lists simply don't allow us. We also plan on adding a real-time
chat server in the next few weeks, allowing everyone to get together
and talk about hockey as well.

For more details on the underlying philosophy of hockeyfanz.com,
please see .

How does this affect you and this mailing list? Basically, it
doesn't, with one exception. Over the next week or so, we'll be
moving most of our hockey lists so that their addresses are from
hockeyfanz.com instead of plaidworks.com. We'll take care of all of
this for you, and warn you before we do it, so don't worry, and when
we do, we'll explain in detail the changes in how the list addresses.
We will try to avoid moving lists on a game day to minimize
disruption of your use of them.

We hope, though, that you'll wander over to hockeyfanz.com and take a
look, and hopefully decide to join in over there. We think we've
built a nice place for hockey fans of all types to hang out and
interact with each other, and with your help, it'll get even better
over time.

We hope you like hockeyfanz.com, and thanks for being part of our family here.

Gen, (and others interested)

Just a thought. Hockey has been growing in most markets. For most people
that I have talked to, their local rink holds a "learn to skate to play
hockey" or "hockey 101" type class. (The names are all different) Most of
these are crash courses on the basics of skating and hockey. Check with your
local rink, see if they do something like this. If not, talk to the rink
manager and/or hockey director. Maybe others have expressed interest and
their just waiting to see if there is enough interest. If not, find out what
they suggest as a starting point in your area.

A lot of areas are also starting beginner hockey leagues - mostly for the
graduates of their learn to skate to play hockey classes. This differs from
a novice league in most areas as the teams actually have coaches and
practices. (Something that is extremely valuable to all players, but mostly
beginners.)

Another thought, if you're willing to tell the list where you are located,
you may be able to find someone in the area you are in that can help you get
started. This could range from explaining the different leagues (my area has
4 adult leagues and tons of kids leagues) to actually helping you learn to
skate.

This list is a wealth of information. All you have to do is ask!

Hi Lulu,

Thanks very much for all the info. I think I am going to call up public
arenas in the area and ask for classes. I am located in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada. We have tons of kids leagues too. I've tried the Ontario Women's
Hockey Association, but they are a lot better than me, can't go yet.

Please let me know if you or anyone else have any more suggestions. Thanks
again!

THE WCHA BATTLE BEGINS - MINNESOTA-DULUTH TO HOST WISCONSIN THIS WEEKEND

THE GAMES:The University of Minnesota-Duluth women's hockey team will host
the University of Wisconsin on Friday (Oct. 20) at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday
at 7:05 p.m. at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) in
their first WCHA series of the season.

THE RECORDS: UMD (2-0-0 overall) as well as Wisconsin (2-0-0 overall)
started their season last weekend with two non-conference wins.

THE SERIES: This will be the third meeting between these two schools in
collegiate competition.

BULLDOGS vs. BADGERS: Last season the Bulldogs swept the Badgers twice; in
the WCHA opening series (Oct. 8-9, 1999) at the Kohl Center in Madison, WI
(8-1 and 4-2) and (Jan. 14-15, 2000) in their home series (6-3 and 14-1).
In the first game in Wisconsin (Oct. 8, 1999), the Bulldogs' Swedish
forward Erika Holst opened WCHA play with a hat trick. Other goals were
scored by Jessi Flink, Michelle McAteer and Hanne Sikio, who tallied a total
of three goals and three assists in the series.
In the second series Hanne Sikio had a total of one goal and seven assist
and Maria Rooth scored four goals and two assists.

COACH BOURGET: Trina Bourget takes over the reigns for the second-year
Badgers as interim head coach after spending the UW's inaugural campaign as
the team's top assistant. The Shrewsbury, Mass., native arrived in Madison
in the summer of 1999 after a successful two-year stay as head coach of
Division III Sacred Heart University. Named the 1998-99 Eastern Collegiate
Athletic Conference/Koho Coach of the Year, she led the Pioneers, in their
third year of existence, to a No. 8 national ranking. Their 15-4-3 record
during the 1998-99 season, good for second in the ECAC, earned Bourget
American Women's Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year Runner-up
honors.
Bourget's most recent coaching experience came this past summer when she
joined the coaching ranks of USA Hockey. She served as co-coach of the USA
Hockey Junior Olympic Development Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y.
A 1994 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Bourget owns a bachelor
of science degree in family and consumer studies. Bourget competed as a
forward and defenseman for the University of New Hampshire women's hockey
team where she helped the Wildcats to the ECAC Division I Championship in
1991, and runners-up finishes 1992 and 1993.

THE BROADCAST: This season all Bulldogs games will be broadcast on 96 Lite
(95.7 FM). The play-by-play announcer is Tom Hansen with former Bulldog
forward Erin Nagurski providing the color commentary.

BULLDOGS BITES: In last Friday's 7-0 win over St. Lawrence University, the
first goal of the season was scored by sophomore defenseman Pamela Pachal at
16:07 of the first period . Bulldogs goalie, Tuula Puputti had her first
shut out of the season with 27 saves ... sophomore forward Maria Rooth
tallied three goals and one assist, being the player of the game ... Rooth's
line mates Jenny Hempel (1-1=2) and Erika Holst (0-2=2) scored four points
combined ... Rookie Bulldog Sheena Podovinnikoff had her first ever goal in
an UMD jersey . In Saturday's 4-3 win, UMD's goals were scored by Erika
Holst (2), Brittny Ralph and Laurie Alexander. Goals were assisted by Jenny
Hempel, Tricia Guest, Sanna Peura, Joanne Eustace and Sheena Podovinnikoff .
Bulldog goalie Tuula Puputti had 26 saves . UMD outshot the Saints 44-29
shots . Erika Holst was selected as a Player of the Game . After the first
series, two Swedes, Maria Rooth (3-1=4) and Erika Holst (2-2=4) are leading
UMD's team scoring.

University (7-0 and 4-3).
The Badgers started their second season with victories over Mercyhurst

WCHA PREVIEW: The men of the WCHA claim 31 national titles as part of their
storied history. In 1999-00, the conference formed its women's league and
wasted little time in reaching national prominence. The Minnesota Golden
Gophers represented the new group with the conference's first national
title, while Minnesota-Duluth reached the national semifinal. These same two
teams, along with Wisconsin, made up the top three schools nationally in
attracting fans and helped the conference lead the country in attendance.
The second season of the WCHA promises more firsts as women's hockey begins
its history as a NCAA sport. Minnesota will play host to the first Women's
Frozen Four for women in March as the fledgling conference attempts to build
on its impressive debut. While Minnesota looks to defend its national title
on its home ice, and Minnesota-Duluth attempts to win back-to-back regular
season and playoff titles, expect greater challenges from the remaining five
squads. The league formed three tiers in its standings during 1999-00 with
UMD and the UM accumulating 44 and 43 points, respectively, Wisconsin
earning 31, and the remaining squads starting 16 points behind the Badgers.
An influx of new talent should allow the lower five teams to close the gap
on the two championship teams. Aiding in that end are some marquee losses
Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth must absorb if they hope to repeat 1999-00
performances. The Gophers will play without WCHA Defensive Player of
the Year Winny Brodt, who will play the year with the U.S. National Team.
Minnesota-Duluth must adjust to life without WCHA Player of the Year Jenny
Schmidgall. Both squads appear to have reloaded and are not expected to miss
a beat.
Internationally flavored Minnesota-Duluth welcomes 19 players back and adds
five newcomers from Finland, Switzerland and Canada. The nation's top two
rookie scorers in WCHA Rookie of the Year Maria Rooth (37-31=68) and
All-WCHA Second Team selection Hanne Sikio (25-39=64) will again grace the
Bulldog ice at forward. Captain and WCHA All-Tournament pick Brittny Ralph
(9-22=31) anchors the blueline, guarding WCHA Tournament MVP Tuula Puputti
who will patrol the crease for UMD.
The Wisconsin Badgers, one of three first-year programs during the 1999-00
season, were the only other team to feature players on the All-WCHA team.
First-team and Under-22 U.S. National Team goaltender Jackie MacMillan
posted an 11-game win streak to lead the Badgers to their third-place finish
during the inaugural season. Defenders Sis Paulsen (17-27=44) and Kerry
Weiland (10-25=35) also played into All-WCHA honors. Sharing the team's
scoring lead were forwards Kelly Kegley (26-19=45) and Kendra Antony
(22-23=45), while 2000-01 co-captain Michelle Sikich (18-20=38) gave the UW
five point-per-game scorers. With newcomers adding depth to the scoring
attack, the Badgers hope to challenge the two champions.

No no no! The OWHA includes lots of adult beginners playing on
low-skill-level recreational teams. The league that my mother helps
organize in the Hamilton area has a 6-team beginners' division which still
has room for a bunch more players, for example. (Write to me if you want
more information about that one - they have many players who travel from
Toronto.)

If you want to start off in a class environment, you can probably find
learn-to-skate classes run by the municipality. Hockey classes for adults
aren't usually provided by the municipality, in my experience in Ontario.
Angela James used to have a good instructional program for beginner adults
at Seneca College - try there first. You could also try inquiring at some
of the arenas which are public/private joint ventures, such as the one at
York University. Universities often provide sports-skill classes to
members of the university community and sometimes to outsiders as well, and
university intramural leagues usually have a category that includes
beginners.

*Please* don't think that you need to be able to play before joining a
team, though. I encourage you to call the OWHA office again, and ask for
referral to "Senior Recreational teams which have room for beginners".

Please email me at: email@hidden

Everyone has given you lots of great ideas. I'd like to reinforce that you
can go to your local women's teams and local leagues even if you think you
aren't ready yet. Our travel team has a practice team of women who are
just starting out, some have never played before. They attend our team
practices and get instruction from our coaches. We are able to attend some
open skates/puck skates with these women to give them some more ice time.
Myself and my co-manager are also friends with the person who runs the
local leagues so we can get contact information for that as well. And
being active in local hockey circles, we also know of upcoming clinics.

So even if you aren't yet ready to skate with an organized team, you can
still use your local teams as a resource for information.

Wow! That's tremendous!
What is that, like 6 times the number of women and girls registered only 10
years ago?

At one point I had heard that hockey was the fastest growing sport in
California and the equipment manufacturers also said it was their biggest
growth market. I am sure there are other states with tremendous growth. I
would expect that Canada and the NE US would be a more mature market with
slower growth.

Well, that's true...But I think that has a lot to do with the weaker
Canadian dollar and not with lack of interest among Canadians.... With
player salaries like they are, Canada can't support very many teams. Maybe
not even the six it has, though I certainly hope all 6 of them survive.

I have some hopes for Ottawa and Vancouver (Toronto and Montreal *will*
survive, of course, unless there's an apocalypse), but I worry about Calgary
and Edmonton.

Also, there's 24 NHL teams in the U.S. because Gary and the BOG decided they
ought to almost double the league's size in less than ten years. That
doesn't mean that there's necessarily a demand for 24 U.S. NHL teams.
Personally, I would have taken expansion much slower. But this is all a
tangent to the main issue, which is that there's a whole lot more amateurs
wanting to play hockey in the U.S. over the past ten years...and I think
that's great!

I think it's important to separate the NHL, which is a business based
on the sport of hockey, and the sport of hockey. the NHL has 24 US
Teams and 6 Canadian teams, but look at the population issues as much
as the state of the canadian dollar -- at the max, there were only
eight NHL teams up there, and the two teams that had to relocate
(Quebec City and Winnipeg) were WHA teams that were considered
marginal for the NHL 30 years ago, which is why they were in the WHA
in the first place (and, FWIW, another WHA-adoptee, Hartford, ended
up having to move in the states, too, so it's not just Canada).

I believe the only WHA city that was adopted into the NHL that's
still extant is Edmonton.

As far as the sport of hockey is concerned, what data I've seen shows
it growing quiet nicely. Here in the SF Bay Area, we've added a few
sheets of ice recently, plus we're seeing continuing growth in
roller, and most of the complaints I hear is that the only available
time is 2AM weekdays. We could add more ice and still be full.

But the number I find amazing is this one. In the greater Vancouver
area, over the last five years they've doubled the number of ice
sheets, adding *40+*. And all of their leagues are still full,
although you no longer have to put a kid on a wait list for their
first team when they come home from the hospital....

(Phil, are those numbers still valid? I think my data's a year old or so now)

Given the recent (or fairly recent anyway) discussion about recruiting, I have a question for anyone that might have an answer. I was wondering how the teams find players to recruit. I mean, if I were a coach I could think of some basic areas, but what about girls like me who play for local teams or on mainly guys teams? I personally don't think I will ever be recruited (partially because it would be rather difficult for people to find me and partially because I am still pretty bad since I just started...) but I was curious anyway. I hope that question made sense.

Oh, while I'm at it...I went to the doctor today to get my knees looked at...as she described it they are "creaky"...I guess that means they make a lot of noise? Anyway, she reccomended that I do some weight lifting stuff with my legs to improve my muscles...Anyone else have/had this problem? What did you do to fix it?

Thanks for any help anyone can give me with either of those questions.

Liz
