Cougars hand Pandas their first loss, Lethbridge jumps to second place

WINNIPEG - The Alberta Pandas were handed their first loss of the
season on Saturday night, a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Regina
Cougars, however they were able to retain their hold on first place.
Alberta's 0.833 winning percentage puts them 83 points ahead of
second-place Lethbridge. Lethbridge opened their season with a win
and a tie in their series in Calgary.

At the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton:
On Friday, Krysty Lorenz' power play goal, her second of the night,
35 seconds into overtime to give the Alberta Pandas a hard-fought 3-2
victory over the visiting Regina Cougars. Lori Shupak had tied the
game at two for Alberta when she scored with 1:05 remaining in the
third period. Regina had taken a 2-0 lead into the third period on
goals by Erin Tady and Julie Foster, before Alberta came back with
the two third period goals. Stacy McCullough stopped 23 of 25 shots
for Alberta, while Laura Paradis made 14 saves on 17 shots for the
Cougars.
On Saturday, Regina again took a 2-0 lead, but this time was able to
hold on and defeat Alberta by a 3-1 score. Regina's 2-0 lead came on
a first period goal by Erin Tady and a second period marker by Julie
Foster. Brandy West scored an empty net goal with 20 seconds left to
seal the victory for the Cougars. Lori Shupak scored the lone Alberta
goal. Regina's Laura Paradis earned her first win of the season,
stopping 17 of 18 shots, while Alberta's Stacy McCullough suffered
her first loss, as she made 28 saves.

At the Olympic Oval in Calgary:
On Friday, Melissa Cusak and Dalziel Frisky scored two goals each to
lead the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 4-0 win over the Calgary
Dinosaurs. Lethbridge led 1-0 after one period, and 3-0 after 40
minutes. Courtney Butler earned the shutout for the Pronghorns,
stopping all 13 shots she faced. Tiana Velestiuk took the loss, while
making 19 saves on 23 shots.
On Saturday, Leslie Hodges scored a goal and an assist for
Lethbridge, but it was not enough to earn the sweep, as the Dinos and
Pronghorns fought to a 2-2 overtime tie. Kerry Caffrey opened the
scoring for Calgary 7:32 into the first period, with a goal assisted
by Stacey Scorenson and Jodie Sorenson. Lethbridge tied the game at
the 3:55 mark, on Darby King's first goal of the season, and took the
lead at the 10:12 point, with a goal by Leslie Hodges. The lead was,
short-lived, as Jill Percy scored for Calgary 1:17 later to tie the
game at two. Neither team could tickle the mesh in the remaining
28:31 of regulation, and the five minute overtime period also settled
nothing.

In non-conference play, at Humboldt, Sask., the Manitoba Bisons swept
a pair of games from the Saskatchewan Huskies, by scores of 8-3 on
Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday.

Women's Hockey Handles No. 5 Harvard

Cambridge, Mass. - The Badgers scored a pair of power-play goals and
Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) scored once and added two assists to
lead seventh-ranked Wisconsin to a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Harvard at
the Bright Hockey Center on Saturday. Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs,
Ont.) added two assists as the Badgers knocked off their second
top-five opponent of the season.

"Kerry Weiland did a super job today, stepping up into the
offensive rush and playing solid defense," coach Trina Bourget said.
"Sis Paulsen did a great job also. They both stayed within their game
and played really well."

Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead with its first power-play goal of the game.
Weiland pinched in at the blue line to keep the puck in the offensive
zone and skated into the slot. Her shot was stopped by Harvard
goaltender Alison Kuusisto, who also stopped the rebound shot from
Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.). Weiland found the second rebound and
pushed it into a half-empty net at the 15:43 mark.

Weiland set up the second power-play score with a point shot
that Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) deflected in from the
slot. Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) extended her point-scoring
streak to seven games with the second assist. The goal, on a
five-on-three, came at 11:40 in the second.

Harvard cut into the lead at 9:27 of the third period. Kalen
Ingram kept the puck on a two-on-one and wristed the puck past the
Badgers' Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.).

"Harvard came ready to play, but it was hard for them because they
didn't have their depth and were missing a couple of key players,"
Bourget said. "They battled hard and were aggressive on the
forecheck."

It stayed a one-goal contest until 18:35 when the Crimson took
their timeout and pulled their goaltender for an extra skater. Thirty
seconds later, Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Penn.) took advantage of the
vacant goal with her third goal of the season. Hunter and Weiland both
got assists.

"The freshman were picking it up on the forecheck led by Steph
Boeckmann," commented Bourget. "Freshman Nicole Uliasz played well
defensively and let the coaches breathe a little easier with the
empty-net goal."

MacMillan stopped 19 shots to earn the win and improve to
6-1-0 on the season. Kuusisto made 17 saves in Harvard's first game of
the year and dropped to 0-1-0.

The Badgers (6-1-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) continue their ECAC weekend
tomorrow. UW travels to Providence, R.I., and Brown (1-0-0), who beat
No. 2 Minnesota, 3-2 in overtime today.

"We played well," added Bourget. "I am proud of our players.
We were playing hard, now we have to play smarter."

GOPHERS FALL IN OVERTIME AT BROWN

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Minnesota outshot Brown and led until the final four
minutes of regulation but the fourth-ranked Bears came from behind to upset
the second-ranked Gophers 3-2 in overtime.

Kim Insalaco scored the game's first goal when her shot was deflected by a
Minnesota player past goalie Erica Killewald nine minutes, 48 seconds into
the opening period.

Laura Slominski got that goal back for Minnesota less than four minutes
later and Tracy Engstrom scored on a breakaway at 2:50 of the second period
to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead.

The scored remained that way until Melissa Rennison tipped in a pass from
Kathleen Kauth with 3:23 to play in the third period.

Kauth got the winner when Cara Gardner threaded a pass to her through the
neutral zone and she forced the puck through Killewald with 1:12 left to
play in the overtime.

Minnesota, which was 0-for-7 on the power play, outshot the Bears 38-32 but
sophomore Pam Dreyer, who recorded an assist on the game-winning goal, made
36 saves. Killewald had 29 saves for the Gophers.

Minnesota travels to Boston, Mass., to face Harvard on Sunday at 2 p.m. EST.
