Northern Exposure - Huskies, Pandas both post lopsided sweeps
Pandas in tie for first, Huskies in playoff position

WINNIPEG - Last week was a bad time to be from the South, as the
northernmost team won every game played, by a combined score of 47-1.
The Alberta Pandas got a measure of revenge from the Lethbridge
Pronghorns for their ties on Nov. 10-11. Lethbridge failed to score a
goal in the series, as they were shutout by 8-0 and 3-0 scores. The
Pandas' sweep puts them in a tie for first place with the Regina
Cougars, who played an exhibition series against the Notre Dame
Midgets. Lethbridge's two losses drop them into fifth spot, below UBC
and Manitoba, who both also had non-conference games.
Saskatchewan travelled to Calgary and swept the Dinos by
scores of 10-0 and 7-1. The Huskies' sweep allowed them to move past
the Dinos into the sixth and final playoff position. On Friday, the
Huskies scored seven goals in the first period and cruised to the
victory. Those seven goals were as many as they had scored in six
previous league games.
In non-conference play, Manitoba continued the trend towards
blowing out southern opposition as they trounced the Concordia
Cobbers, an NCAA Division III team, by scores of 9-0 on Saturday and
10-0 on Sunday. Trisha Faurschou had six goals and nine points in the
two games for the Bisons.
The league has started its winter break, the next league
games will not take place until Jan. 5-6, when Regina plays
Saskatchewan. Non-conference action this weekend sees the Richmond
Steelers visiting UBC on Friday, North Dakota travelling to Manitoba
for a Friday-Saturday series and Brandon playing at Winnipeg on
Sunday.

That was the week that was:

At the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton: (#4 Alberta 8, Lethbridge 0; #4
Alberta 3, Lethbridge 0)
On Friday, the Alberta Pandas scored five goals in the third period
on their way to the 8-0 win. Alberta led 3-0 after two periods, on
goals by Mandy Kinjerski, Jody Grabas and Erin van de Wetering.
Alberta took advantage of Lethbridge's change of goaltenders between
the second and third periods, as they lit up Pronghorns backup Angela
Watts for five goals on ten shots. 'Horns starter Courtney Butler
took the loss, her first of the season, and stopped 21 of 24 shots in
40 minutes. Stacy McCullough picked up her fourth shutout of the
season for Alberta. The Pandas held a significant edge in shots on
goal, taking 34 shots at the Lethbridge net, while allowing only 15.
Lori Shupak led the Pandas with three points (1G, 2A), while
Kinjerski and Grabas had two goals each.
Saturday's match was much closer, as the Pandas won by a 3-0 margin.
Tonya d'Entremont gave Alberta a 1-0 lead at the 14:24 mark of the
second period. Jody Grabas and Mandy Kinjerski added third period
goals to clinch the series sweep. The Pandas' Stacy McCullough
stopped 13 shots en route to her second consecutive shutout. Courtney
Butler stopped 23 of 26 shots for Lethbridge, and took her second
straight loss. Lethbridge suffered through some penalty troubles, as
they took nine minor penalties, as compared to Alberta's two minors,
but the Pandas were unable to capitalize. Alberta was unable to score
in the 13:48 they were on the power play. Lethbridge was unable to
take advantage of their sole power play.

At the Olympic Oval in Calgary:   (Saskatchewan 10, Calgary 0;
Saskatchewan 7, Calgary 1)
On Friday, the Saskatchewan Huskies unleashed six games' worth of
frustration on the Dinosaurs, overwhelming the Dinos with a
seven-goal outburst in the first 20 minutes. Saskatchewan's first
period output matched its total output for the season so far. The
Huskies scored five of their goals in a stretch from 4:30 to 11:35 of
the first. Danielle Stachiw and Joanie Tullouch scored a pair of
goals each in the first, while Jessie Thorson, Misty Bertram and
Taryn Fjeld added singles. In the final fourty minutes, the Huskies
added another three goals, to reach the final 10-0 margin. Thorson,
Bertram and Fjeld each picked up their second goal of the game. Robin
Nuttall stopped all 15 shots sent to her, to pick up her first
shutout (and first win) of the season. Tiana Velestuk faced 58
Saskatchewan volleys, and made 48 saves for the Dinos.
On Saturday, Saskatchewan used a four-goal second period to pace
themselves to a 7-1 win. The Dogs led 2-0 after the first, on goals
by Thorson and Kimberley Torborg. Suzanne Hanchar put the Dinos on
the board 52 seconds into the second. The Huskies squelched any
momentum as they scored 1:12 later on Lisa Dohm's first goal of the
season. Joanna Mould put the Huskies up 4-1 at 5:15, while Taryn
Fjeld scored two goals 53 seconds apart midway through the period to
give the spoils to Saskatchewan. Jessie Thorson's second goal of the
game rounded out the scoring. Laura Taylor picked up the win, making
19 saves on 20 shots, while Calgary's Tiana Velestuk saved 43 of 50
shots in a losing effort.

At the Max Bell Centre in Winnipeg: (#8 Manitoba 9, Concordia-Mhd
0; #8 Manitoba 10, Concordia-Mhd 0)
On Saturday, Manitoba routed the Concordia Cobbers, an NCAA Division
III school from Moorhead, Minn., by a 9-0 score. Trisha Faurschou had
a natural hat trick for the Bisons, while Jacqui Elliott added four
points (1G, 3A). Five other players scored for the Bisons. Laurie
Wagner and Pam Staples split the shutout, and were not seriously
tested as the Cobbers managed only five shots on goal, including none
in the second period. Sarah Keucher made 36 saves for Concordia on 45
Manitoba shots.
On Sunday, Manitoba trounced the Cobbers 10 to 0. Trisha Faurschou
picked up her second hat trick in as many nights, and finished the
weekend with nine points. Jacqui Elliott, Kathy Van Deynze and
Kristen Nickel each had two goals for the Bisons. Karen Mamchuk had
the other Bisons marker. Staples and Wagner again split the shutout,
facing a combined 12 shots on goal. The Cobbers' Shyla Wilson stopped
43 of 53 shots sent her way. This game became chippy near the end, as
the Cobbers took six penalties for 12 PIM in the last two minutes of
the game.
