Women"s Hockey Signs Three Early

Madison, Wis. - Interim head women"s hockey coach Trina Bourget announced today that forward Jackie Friesen (Regina, Sask.), defender Molly Engstrom (Siren, Wis.) and goaltender Jessica Bernal (Chatsworth, Calif.) have signed National Letters of Intent and will attend the University of Wisconsin beginning in the fall of 2001.

Jackie Friesen, a 5-10 1/2 left wing, is set to co-captain her high school boys" team at Thom Collegiate Regina her senior season. Friesen has been a part of the team the past two years while also playing for the Regina Royals female midget hockey team. Last year, the Team Saskatchewan player recorded 78 points on 38 goals and 40 assists in 34 games with the Royals. With Team Saskatchewan, Friesen helped her squad to fourth at the national championship. She was also part of Team Saskatchewan Midgets as a sophomore and helped them to fourth at the Canada Winter Games. Her freshman year she helped the Regina Royals to a provincial silver medal.
Friesen is also a four-year volleyball player and was named to the city all-star team for this year. Named her high school"s junior female athlete of the year as a sophomore, Friesen also competes for the fastball team, Canada"s version of softball.
Friesen is the daughter of Lean and Edie Friesen.

Bourget on Friesen:
*Jackie Friesen is a strong left-winger who will bring size, strength and a scoring touch around the net to Wisconsin. She"s got a great shot, good hands and an excellent work ethic and attitude.*

Molly Engstrom, a 5-9 defenseman for Culver Academy in Culver, Ind., attended Siren High School for her freshman and sophomore years. As a junior at Culver, Engstrom recorded 18 goals, 18 assists and 36 points in 40 games. Prior to Culver, the Wisconsin native spent three years with the Minnesota Thoroughbreds, helping the team to national runner-up finishes during the 1996-97 and the 1998-99 seasons. Engstrom also competed in the AAA Team Minnesota Hockey Festival as part of the Wisconsin Selects boys" team from 1995-97. She also competed in the tournament as part of the 1998 girls" team, the first year offered to girls. Engstom is a three-time participant at the USA Hockey Olympic Development Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Engstrom defines the phrase !all-around athlete" with a Wisconsin State discus title as a sophomore, sectional and regional championships and a 19th-place state finish as a freshman cross country runner, and a volleyball regional championship as a sophomore at Siren. In her junior year at Culver, Engstrom helped her golf team to a 16th-place finish at the state meet while winning discus sectional and regional titles and finishing eighth at the state meet. She was named Culver"s track and field MVP.
Engstom is the daughter of Judy and Rick Engstrom.

Bourget on Engstrom
*Signing Molly makes our already talented defensive corps that much stronger. She brings many outstanding attributes that our current blue-liners possess: great skating ability, puck control, coupled with hockey sense and great play-making ability. Not only is Molly solid defensively, but she will be able to step up and join the offensive rush. I am thrilled that Wisconsin-native Molly Engstom will be donning the red jersey in 2001. It is always our goal to recruit the best in Wisconsin, but it is also to recruit the best players in the nation and Molly fits both categories.*

Jessica Bernal, a 5-6 goaltender, played the past three years with the West Valley Wolves boys" at the bantam and then the midget level. An academic achievement award winner the last three years with the Wolves, Bernal helped her team to third place at the California State Championship as a sophomore. Starting that same year, she participated at the USA Hockey National Development Camp, earning the top goaltender award at the Pacific District Regionals. She also helped the Under-15 California Selects women"s team to second place. As a junior, she won the skills competition at the U.S. Nationals as part of the Under-19 California Selects. She is again part of the Under-19 California Selects as a senior.
An attendee of Chatsworth High School, Bernal is the daughter of Ilene and Michael Bernal.

Bourget on Bernal:
*We are excited to have Jessica Bernal joining current goaltenders Jackie MacMillan and Jen Neary. She was one of the top goaltenders in the country at the USA Hockey Olympic Development Camp in Lake Placid this summer. She has the ability to stop the puck. She has natural athletic ability and the quick reflexes to be in the right place at the right time to make the save.*

Bourget on the 2001 recruiting class
*All three early signees are talented individuals with terrific character, are young women possessing strong work ethic and each have the motivation to succeed. All three have achieved academic success in addition to their athletic success.*
