Today's National Post reports that TSN (The Sports Network) has been
successful in its application for a women's sports channel to be a "must
carry" digital offering on Canadian cable. The station is to be up and
running by Fall 2001. So, it looks like we'll be doing more taping of hockey
games for our American cousins :)

Yeah! This is so great! This means I would spend even more time watching
TV. We can show people on TV that women atheletes can be as good as men.

Wisconsin Falls to Defending National Champions

Middleton, Wis. - In a battle of the first and second-place teams in
the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, the women's hockey Badgers
scored first and Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) scored twice, but
Wisconsin fell short of defending national champion Minnesota, 5-2, at
Capitol Ice Arena on Friday.
At 5:48, Hunter sent the puck from behind the net to Sis
Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) at the left point. Hunter skated into the
slot after the pass and redirected Paulsen's shot past Minnesota's
Erica Killewald. Hunter's 22nd gave the UW a 1-0 lead with the
power-play goal.
Things stayed 1-0 until with 16 seconds left in the first
period, Minnesota's Nadine Muzerall beat UW netminder Jackie MacMillan
(Buffalo, Minn.) with a snap shot on the power-play. The Badgers went
1-for-5 while Minnesota was 1-for-3 with the player advantage in the
first period.
Muzerall would give Minnesota its first lead of the game with
her second power-play goal at 14:22 of the second. Tracy Engstrom
retrieved the puck behind the net and flipped it to Muzerall on the
right goal line. Muzerall beat MacMillan short-side, after the goalie
was caught leaning off the post, giving the Gophers a 2-1 lead.
Hunter squared the contest at two, 5:19 into the third with a
wrist shot from high in the left face-off circle just inside the far
post. Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) extended her point-scoring streak
to nine games with the assist. But 26 seconds later, Muzerall and the
Gophers regained the lead for good. The senior flipped the puck in the
air on goal, hitting it off MacMillan's glove, off the inside of the
post and in.
Ambria Thomas would add a fourth goal at 8:05 and Laura
Slominski gave the Gophers their third power-play tally of the game at
12:02 to close out the scoring. Minnesota finished 3-for-9 on the
power-play, but failed to score on a 46 second three-on-five advantage
in the second period that helped keep the Badgers in the game.
Wisconsin finished 1-for-6 on the power play.
MacMillan stopped 27 shots and dropped to 8-3-1 on the year.
Minnesota's Killewald stopped 22 shots, upping her record to 8-2-0.
The Badgers (9-3-1, 6-2-1 WCHA) will look to rebound tomorrow
in the series finale with the Gophers (9-2-0, 8-1-0). The teams meet
at the Capitol Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m.
