HI,

As you may recall, I was the one who's looking around to get into hockey
and wondering about the cost of playing. Thank you very much for all your
help on the issue. I have a pretty good idea of what to do next.
Unfortunately, my OSAP repayment just came and I run into financial
difficulties. I wanted to play so much, but I think now all I can do is to
keep practicing on my skating (free ones). I think if I am good at skating,
I will be ahead. Then, when I am better financially, I can join leagues and
start playing. (At least I am not wasting my time now) I really want to
play though. Tough time...

Women*s Hockey Drops Wild One To No. 4 Brown

Providence, R.I. * Wisconsin scored three times in the
first 1:43 of the game, but failed to hold on as the
seventh-ranked Badgers fell 5-3 to No. 4 Brown at
Meehan Auditorium on Sunday.
Karen Rickard (Bowmanville, Ont.) opened the scoring
just 18 seconds into the contest when Kelly Kegley
(Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) flipped the puck to
Rickard from behind the net. Rickard finished into an
open net. 17 seconds later, Meghan Hunter (Oil
Springs, Ont.) scored after winning the puck along the
boards, centering it to Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.)
and receiving the return pass. Hunter snapped the puck
up off the crossbar from just outside the crease for
the 2-0 lead.
Kegley upped the lead to 3-0 at 1:43 when she skated
in from the blue line and beat Brown goaltender Katie
Germain to the short side with a wrist shot. Kerry
Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) sent Kegley in for the score.
The goal chased the rookie goaltender to the bench,
and brought in sophomore Pam Dreyer who would blank
Wisconsin the rest of the way.
*We knew that Meghan Hunter was going to see her
former teammate [Katie Germain] in goal tonight and
our goal was to go hard and rattle her early,* head
coach Trina Bourget said. *It was Karen Rickard who
struck first. Anytime things happen that quickly you
have to keep battling like it*s 0-0. Brown is a great
team and is No. 4 for a reason.*
Brown got on the board with a power-play goal from
the point at 7:24. Mandy McCurdy beat a screened
Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) to make it a 3-1
contest.
Emily Sigman then closed the gap to 3-2 in similar
fashion at 9:17. The defenseman*s point shot found the
net past a screened MacMillan. Christina Sorbara
brought Brown all the way back at 17:48 of the period,
deflecting a point shot from Marguerite McDonald up
over MacMillan and squaring the game at three.
The teams skated to a scoreless second period and a
scoreless third until the 14:27 mark. Brown*s Emily
Sigman misfired on a cross-ice pass the banked off the
boards and in on MacMillan. The Badger goaltender
attempted to cover the puck, but it slipped past her
glove, banking off her goal pad and into the slot. Kim
Insalaco followed the play and scored what would be
the game*winning goal.
Brown added insurance on a second fluke goal at
19:22. Courtney Johnson*s centering attempt hit
MacMillan*s goalie stick and dropped between the
goaltender*s legs. Patricia Long followed the play,
poking the puck off the left skate of MacMillan and to
the far side of the goal where Meredith Ostrander
finished to seal the 5-3 win.
*We had a really strong second period,* said Bourget.
*If you look at each period, we gave up three goals in
the first but were still tied. Same with the second
period, we were still tied 3-3. In the third period, a
couple of mistakes cost us. We could have covered the
puck on the fourth goal and we just didn*t have enough
today. Brown just kept battling back.*
MacMillan made 32 saves and absorbed the loss to
fall to 6-2-0. Dreyer earned the win in relief with 30
saves and improved to 2-0-0.
The Badgers (6-2-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) stay on the road and
travel to Ohio State in their next action. Wisconsin
plays the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio on Nov. 10-11 at
7:05 p.m., at OSU Ice Arena.

THIS WEEK: The University of Wisconsin (6-2-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) continues its road swing with a pair of conference games at Ohio State (3-4-0, 2-2-0). The Badgers and Buckeyes take to the ice at OSU Ice Arena in Columbus, Ohio on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11 at 6:05 p.m. CST.

Practice times: Wisconsin practices at The Shell this week from Monday to Wednesday between 4-6 p.m. Please contact Paul Capobianco at 608-263-1983 for all media requests.

BADGER RANKINGS: The Badgers climbed to their highest ranking to date when the 10 NCAA Division I coaches taking part in the U.S. College Hockey Online Poll voted Wisconsin No. 5 in the country this week. Wisconsin garnered 52 points after defeating then-No. 5 Harvard and falling to then-No. 4 Brown. Dartmouth is the unanimous No. 1, with Brown now ranked No. 2 in the country. Minnesota dropped from No. 2 to a share of No. 3 with Minnesota-Duluth.
The Badgers rank No. 6 in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Poll released last week.

GOOD WILL HUNTING: Frosh Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) set up a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in the Badgers" 3-1 win over then-No. 5 Harvard on Saturday. Hunter had her goal-scoring string snapped at six games , but extended her point-scoring string to eight games with her 12th goal of the season against then-No. 4 Brown.
With three points over the weekend, Hunter now leads the WCHA and the country in goals (12), power-play goals (5), and freshman scoring (12-6=18), and ranks second in points (18) and power-play points (5-2=7). In strictly WCHA contests, she shares the lead in goals (8) and power-play goals (4), ranks second in frosh scoring (8-4=12), fourth in overall points (12) and shares fourth in power-play points (4-1=5).

A POINT A DAY: Sophomore Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) had an assist in each game during the Badgers" two-game tour of the ECAC this past weekend, extending her scoring streak to eight games. Antony set up Kerry Weiland"s power-play goal to open the scoring against Harvard. She set up Meghan Hunter"s goal against Brown on Sunday to up her team-leading assist total to nine.
The Badgers" top scorer as a frosh, Antony ranks second on the squad and shares fifth in the conference with 14 points. The wing ranks third in the conference with nine assists and shares seventh with five goals.

POINT! WISCONSIN: Totalling a goal and three assists against No. 5 Harvard and No. 4 Brown over the weekend, defenseman Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) led all Badgers in scoring. The sophomore scored the opening goal in the Badgers" 3-1 win over Harvard, while assisting on the game-winner and the insurance marker. On Sunday against Brown, Weiland set up the UW"s third goal of the contest.
Weiland climbed to a share of second in scoring among WCHA defenders with 10 points and a share of fourth overall with eight assists. She also shares third with six points on the power-play.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME: After registering just two assists in the Badgers" first six games, the UW"s leading goal scorer from 1999-00 notched two goals and an assist for Wisconsin over the weekend. Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) tallied the game-winning goal with a power-play tally during the second period against then-No. 5 Harvard. Kegley deflected a point shot past the Harvard goaltender for the score.
Kegley scored a goal on Sunday and set up another against Brown to up her season point total to five and give her two goals on the year.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: The Badgers continue to jump out to leads and have now scored the first goal in each of their first eight contests. Kerry Weiland kept the streak in tact when she tallied 15:43 into the first period against Harvard last Saturday. Karen Rickard (Bowmanville, Ont.) became the fifth Badger to score first with a goal 13 seconds into the UW"s game at Brown on Sunday. Kendra Antony scored the first goal in both games this against St. Cloud State on Oct. 27 and 28. Meghan Hunter did the same against Minnesota-Duluth the second series of the season as well as in the Badgers" first game of the season against Mercyhurst. Steph Millar (Hudson, Wis.) scored the first UW goal in the Badgers" other game against Mercyhurst.

SCOUTING OHIO STATE: The Ohio State University enters this week"s series with Wisconsin at 3-4-0, 2-2-0 WCHA. The Buckeyes split a conference series with Bemidji State last weekend, falling 2-1 before rebounding for a 5-2 win. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for OSU. The Buckeyes previous win was a 4-2 victory over then No. 2 Minnesota.
Shana Frost paces OSU scorers with four goals and four assists for eight points. Corinne Rosen follows with three goals and four assists. A pair of frosh defenders, Kelli Halcisak (6 points) and Emma Laaksonen (5 points), along with frosh forward Jeanne Chapple (5 points), round out the top scorers.
In goal, April Stojak has seen all the action for OSU and sports a 2.87 goals against average and .841 save percentage this year.
Jacki Barto (Providence, 1984) is in her second year with OSU after leading the Buckeyes to a 8-26-3 mark in the first year of the program during the 1999-00 season.

BADGERS AGAINST THE BUCKEYES: The Badgers lead the Buckeyes, 3-1-1, in the all-time series. Wisconsin earned its first program win against OSU on Oct. 15, 1999 when Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) broke a 1-1 tie to give the UW its 2-1 victory. Ohio State avoided the sweep with a 1-1 tie in the second game of that weekend. The Badgers swept the Buckeyes, 6-2 and 3-2, in the season's second weekend series between the two teams, but fell 4-2 at the WCHA Tournament in the season"s final contest.
Kerry Weiland led the Badgers against the Buckeyes last season with five goals and four assists in five games. Kelly Kegley was equally as impressive despite only playing in three of the five meetings. Kegley registered a hat trick against OSU and finished the season with four goals and two assists when the two teams met. Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) showed strength in the series with a goal and five assists in five games.

Head coach trina bourget: Trina Bourget takes over the reigns for the second-year Badgers as interim head coach after spending the UW"s inaugural campaign as the team"s top assistant. The Shrewsbury, Mass., native arrived in Madison in the summer of 1999 after a successful two-year stay as head coach of Division III Sacred Heart University. Named the 1998*99 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference/Koho Coach of the Year, she led the Pioneers, in their third year of existence, to a No. 8 national ranking. Their 15-4-3 record during the 1998*99 season, good for second in the ECAC, earned Bourget American Women"s Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year Runner-up honors.
Bourget"s most recent coaching experience came this past summer when she joined the coaching ranks of USA Hockey. She served as co-coach of the USA Hockey Junior Olympic Development Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y.
A 1994 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Bourget owns a bachelor of science degree in family and consumer studies. Bourget competed as a forward and defenseman for the University of New Hampshire women"s hockey team where she helped the Wildcats to the ECAC Division I Championship in 1991, and runners-up finishes 1992 and 1993.
A former referee, Bourget brings a great understanding of all aspects of the game. She spent over 11 years in the official"s stripes and received her *B* Pool license from the International Ice Hockey Federation. She also achieved the status of a USA Hockey Level 4 official. Bourget worked games involving the U.S. National Team, the Norwegian Women"s National Team, as well as three U.S. Girls" and Women"s National Tournaments from 1997-99. At the 1996 Women"s Select Officials Camp held in Lake Placid, N.Y., Bourget earned Most Dedicated Official as voted on by her peers.

The Leaders of the pack: After spending the 1999-00 season with a rotating captain system, the Badgers have settled on junior forward Michelle Sikich and sophomore forward Sis Paulsen as team co-captains. Sikich is the only three-year college player on the Wisconsin roster, while Paulsen was the 1999-00 team MVP and one of the two Badger representatives on last season"s All-WCHA First Team.

which time Minnesota has posted a 63-4-3 record. The Gophers are just

I was looking for something on the USAHockey website and noticed this.
There is the National Women's Team, and then there is the National Team.
The National Team is the men's team. Surprise. Not too PC.

Hi,

It's me again. I am wondering if I want to play goal eventually, how
different is the skating? I think I should still learn the basic (stopping,
backward skating, turning) skating skills first, right? I am just thinking,
if I keep practicing on a normal hockey skate, can I still get into playing
goal in the future.

As for the playing thing, I am still in some finanncial stress. So, Bruce
(from the Icebreakers), please email me and give me a number to call so we
can discuss playing and paying more? Thanks so much for all your help.

Yes, I'd say so. One of the hockey truisms is that the goalie should be
the best skater on the team. So all you can do to practise skating skills
will help you out in the future, whatever positions you get a chance to
play. You mention stopping, backwards skating, and turning - also using
efficient powerful strides in skating forwards, various ways of moving from
side to side, changing direction, and various exercises in using your
inside and outside edges.

If you're doing most of your practising at public skating, be aware that as
a hockey player you will need to become equally comfortable turning in both
directions. So don't be shy about asking the arena workers when/whether
they change directions, and planning your visits so that you skate both
clockwise and counter-clockwise. (In some places they change every half
hour, at some arenas they skate counter-clockwise for an hour, then flood
and skate clockwise, and at other arenas they skate counter-clockwise all
the time because nobody complains.)

Have fun!

Louise

Thank you so much, Louise. Unfortunately, I don't really know how to do
different skatings. Any suggestions? The rink I went to is a public rink,
it's always skating in 1 direction. But sometimes there's very few or no
one there so I can skate any directions I like. Lucky me. I think I can do
a lot of my practises there, but I need to know how to do them first. (e.g.
moving from side to side, exercieses in using inside and outsides edges,
etc.)

Hi Gen,
There are two really good videos for learning the skating basics: One from
Robby Glantz and the other from Laura Stamm. You can order them direct on
their websites.
http://www.robbyglantz.com/
http://www.laurastamm.com/
The book from Laura Stamm is also very good.
Have fun!

MUZERALL'S TWO GOALS LEAD GOPHERS TO WIN OVER BULLDOGS

Third-ranked Minnesota scored three times in the third and got two goals
from Nadine Muzerall en route to a 4-0 victory over fourth-ranked
Minnesota-Duluth.

After a scoreless first period, Muzerall scored her third goal of the season
at 8:10 of the second. She grabbed a loose puck in the right faceoff circle
and beat Bulldog goalie Riana Burke on the short side.

Muzerall kicked off the Gophers' three-goal third period when she scored at
the 5:43 mark. Laura Slominski scored with 6:03 to play with a delayed
penalty on Minnesota-Duluth and Ronda Curtin's unassisted goal with 47.2
seconds to play finished the scoring.

Despite missing its top six scorers and dressing only 15 players, the
Bulldogs hung with the Minnesota through two periods, with the shots on goal
tied at 18. However, the Gophers finished with a 27-23 advantage as Erica
Killewald recorded her first shutout of the season.

The two teams are slated to meet again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. to conclude
their two-game series at Mariucci Arena.

Women*s Hockey Blanks Ohio State

Columbus, Ohio * Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) made 22 saves while Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) and Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) each scored a goal as fifth-ranked Wisconsin defeated Ohio State, 2-0, at OSU Ice Arena on Friday.
After a scoreless first period with a combined seven shots between the two teams, the Badgers grabbed the lead as they have done in all previous eight games. Wisconsin took advantage when an OSU defender fell in the slot. The fall opened room for Steph Millar (Hudson, Wis.), who found Hunter in front. Hunter shielded off a defenseman, waited as OSU goaltender April Stojak went down, and finished just under the crossbar for her NCAA-best 13th goal of the year. The score came at 2:22 of the second stanza.
Paulsen put the game away in the third period with a power-play goal at 16:07. Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) made the play at the right blue line, keeping the puck in the offensive zone with a half dive on a Buckeye clearing attempt. Weiland went cross-ice with the puck to Paulsen, whose shot was headed 10-feet wide. The puck instead deflected off an OSU defender*s stick in the high slot and past Stojak for the Badgers* 2-0 lead.
MacMillan and the Badgers made the lead stand. The UW goaltender made two big saves, one on Kelli Halcisak, who beat a UW defenseman before skating in one-on-one with MacMillan during a first-period UW penalty kill. The second save came late in the third period on a low, screened rebound she stopped with her blocker.
*Jackie played well to get the shutout,* Head Coach Trina Bourget said. *She made the big saves when she had to.*
It was MacMillan*s second shtout of the season as she upped her record to 7-2-0, 4-1-0 WCHA. Stojak made 18 saves and fell to 3-5-0, 2-3-0 WCHA for Ohio State.
*We did the little things right tonight: we were working together, winning the one-on-one battles and sticking together as a unit,* commented Bourget. *We cleaned up our defensive-zone coverage and were disciplined in our own end. It all started with our forwards back-checking and playing solid in all three zones.*
The Badgers (7-2-0, 4-1-0 WCHA) and Buckeyes (3-5-0, 2-3-0) complete their series on Saturday when the teams meet at 6:05 p.m. CST at OSU Ice Arena.

2-0 Canada after two periods. Heavey with a goal on a spectacular rush. USA
outshot Canada by quite a lot, St. Pierre playing well in the Canadian goal.
More bodychecking as the game progresses as well.

2-0 Canada is the final. Strong defensive performance in the third, St.
Pierre with the shutout. Canada seemed to have more legs in the third.
Campbell and Goyette on the sidelines (groin and concussion, respectively).

Hi all,

I've been reading the reviews of the 4 Nations Cup games and don't see some
familiar names like Alana Blahoski, Laurie Baker, Tara Mounsey... Are they
injured? Playing poorly? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
B

Women's Hockey Rallies For Tie

Columbus, Ohio - Wisconsin overcame a 3-1 deficit and rallied for a
3-3 tie against Ohio State at the OSU Ice Arena Saturday. Kendra
Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) notched the equalizer with 47 seconds
remaining; three seconds after the Badgers pulled their goaltender for
an extra skater. Antony finished with a goal and two assists, while
Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ont.) scored twice and set up the
game-tying goal.

"Hunter and Antony provided us with finishing touches when we needed
them," commented coach Trina Bourget. "They had great goals. Our
defense pinched and gave them chances to finish."

It was the Buckeyes, however, that got on the board first on an
unassisted power-play goal by Lindsey Steblen. The forward won the
puck in the corner and skated out front, untouched, before hitting the
far side at 11:43 of the first period.

Wisconsin answered before the period expired as Hunter scored
on the power play. Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) poked the puck away
from an OSU defender, keeping the puck in the offensive zone. Hunter
picked up the puck and found Antony in the corner, who gave a return
pass to the cutting center for the goal at 16:13.

In the second period, OSU regained the lead with its second
power-play tally. Melissa Pirie won a loose puck in the high slot,
pushing it low to Corinne Rosen. Rosen beat UW goaltender Jackie
MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) just 1:43 into the second period.

Ohio State went up 3-1 when defenseman Kelli Halcisak joined
the play for an OSU two-on-one at 3:16. Halcisak scored after taking a
pass from Lindsey Ogren who went wide down the left boards.

Hunter and the Badgers closed the gap to within one at 13:22
of the second. Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) came off the bench to
keep in an Ohio State clearing atempt. Paulsen spun back towards the
boards and sent the puck deep for a waiting Antony in the corner.
Antony found Hunter cutting in the slot and hit the frosh in stride.
Hunter finished for her second of the night and 15th of the season.

The teams skated to a scoreless third until the final minute
when the Badgers pulled MacMillan with 50 seconds left. Antony took a
pass from Hunter in the high slot and beat OSU goalie April Stojack up
high for the tying score. Karen Rickard (Bowmanville, Ont.) was also
credited with an assist.

"In the third period we played with much more intensity and
desperation. We were fortunate to be able to come back and leave here
with a point," coach Bourget said. "We were able to rise to the
challenge and battle back. The third line with Melanie Schmitt, Steph
Boeckmann and Julia Ortenzio did a great job on the forecheck."

MacMillan stopped 15 OSU shots in earning her first tie of the
year. Stojak made 22 saves to help the Buckeyes tie and improve to
3-5-1, 2-3-1.

The Badgers (7-2-1, 4-1-1 WCHA) complete their six-game road
trip on Nov. 17-18 when they travel to take on Bemidji State (4-7-0,
3-3-0). Both games are slated for 7:05 p.m., at the John S. Glas
Fieldhouse.

If anyone has the Four Nations Cup Final between the US and Canada, that TSN
showed on Saturday, on tape and would like to make a few $$ doing a dub for
me I'd like to hear from you. I have quite a collection of game tapes from
these international tournaments between the US and Canada and would hate to
miss adding this one.

If anyone can help, please email!

I've been reffin' for a few years, and as far as I know, no such thing
exists. There are a couple of places on the web, like The Officials'
Wearhouse, that sell a bunch of gear, and carry multi brands, but no
specific female gear, yet ;^) There are some differences in what works
best for the female officials vs the males, but ... In the Southeast
District for USA Hockey, we now have a Women Officials' Development
person, Terry Jeffas. I'm the local Virginia/Maryland/DC person. Point
being, we're trying to do some things, including e-mail discussion list &
info meetings, mailings about womens issues.

As far as getting gear - most of the women officials use the Bauer
Official's girdle under the pants, wear the same CCM pants as the guys
(just they're big in the waist and either you take them in, or use a
belt) and the Bauer Officials shin pads & elbows. The shin pads are light
weight, and pretty adjustable, so they work well, and the men's small
elbow pads are more comfy than player ones, and not so bulky. I had to
add extra velcro and snip the tails a bit so they wouldn't slip down,
but....The lovely striped polyester sweaters are pretty
generic.Alternatively, some folks use roller hockey girdles. The

Major difference is in what's under the equipment. Most comfy stuff I've
used and seen used is the lightweight or silkweight FEMALE long underwear
that Patagonia makes - they're called Capilene tights. Work great under
the girdle and shin pads. I use Nike or similar Dri-fit black long sleeve
crew-neck tee's under the elbow pads and sweater. A lot of guys use
cotton tees and runner's leggings. Or even thermal underwear. My crew who
actually talk about this think that the thermies are tooo bulky under the
girdle. Up to you if you want to wear a jill over the girdle. I don't
know anyone who does, although the guys all wear cups. My advice, don't
wear like aerobic/spandex shorts under the girdle - they bunch up, get
really warm and you want something under the shin pads and polyester
pants ;^)

I bet this is more than anyone wanted to know. But, sorry to bore the
list, if someone wants to talk - feel free to e-mail me. Generally I just
lurk here ;^)

FYI -- we would be more than happy to support things like this -- if
organizations want a private place to talk stuff through we'd be more
than happy to set it up over on our hockeyfanz forums. And we can be
talked into handling mail lists, too (although we think for most
groups, forums are a cleaner, lower-administrative-overhead thing).

One reason we did hockeyfanz.com was to create a place where we COULD
create virual neighborhoods like this. We're more than willing to
help groups where we can. Just talk to us privately.

I agree about the problems with ref equipment. My biggest problem is
the hip area in the pants. I don't think guys understand this concept.

Skating is very important for goalies. In my team's practices, I skate all
the same drills as my teammates. Sometimes when a goalie coach comes, we
learn special techniques like shuffling and T-gliding and things like that.
Goalie skates are different, too for the goalie techniques. They're not made
for skating really fast forwards and backwards and doing crossovers. They're
more for c-cuts backwards and other goalie moves. If you go to a goalie
school they emphasize the goalie skating techniques and they really helped me
a lot.

Hi Ladies:

I'm not sure if this is the right "forum", but I have a pair of Bauer goalie
skates for sale, size 6. I'm asking $100 for them. I wore them for one
season only.....they are in very good shape.

Thanks.

Naomi

As a small town roller hockey player from California I was thrilled this last
weekend to attend my first ice hockey game!!! I was at a conference in
Colorado and Saturday had a free day . My only goal was to find an ice hockey
game somewhere...anywhere...any level! My husband and I found a highschool
and/or college women's team at the Apex Center in Arvada that started at
about 11pm. The girls might have wondered who that stranger with the crazy
grin was in the audience...it was so fun!!! Just have to say here, to an
audience that understands...
HOCKEY ROCKS!!!!
