Hello y'all,

I wanted to know whether any of you have a knee condition called
"chondromalacia patella" and if so how it has affected yours and your
daughters' hockey careers.

I know a lot about this is a chronic condition - because I have it and I
just found out that my little Rachel may have it now or in the future
. (without scoping her knee the doc cannot tell us for sure) She has been
complaining of knee pain when she runs, and so we have made her quit soccer
and ballet for the remainder of the season. We had x-rays taken and she
has no cartilage damage, but is told she could be prone to it and the
Chondromalacia if we are not REALLY careful about what sports she
does. She has hyper mobile kneecaps (as do I) which is probably causing
the pain -- the kneecaps move all over and rough up her cartilage. The
pounding from running seems to be the worst culprit.

Up until this point the hockey doesn't seem to bother her knee like the
running and ballet do. The sports medicine specialist is letting her play
hockey this season and thinks that the gliding motion of the skating may
not cause her the pain that the other two sports do. He says that the
pain should be our guide and that if hockey doesn't cause pain than she can
probably continue to play hockey even if she has to give up soccer and ballet.

I know from my own experience that this is a very common condition in
female athletes, but I wondered what your experiences are with it and how
it affects one's ability to play hockey specifically without pain and
damage.

Heidi, Mom of the Little Redhead Rachel
