SEEKING COACHES FOR WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY AT MIT!!

MIT Women's Ice Hockey Club Team is looking for a Head
Coach and an Assistant Coach for the 2000-2001 season.

Previous coaching experience is not necessary, but a
passion for hockey and coaching is a must.
Applications are accepted immediately. This is a
great opportunity to gain formal coaching experience.

The members of the MIT Women's Ice Hockey Club are
enthusiastic graduate students, alumni, staff and
undergraduate students with hockey skills
ranging from beginner to advanced. The club was
founded in 1980 and became an alternative to the MIT
Women's Varsity Team in 1998. Last season, the Club
Team had a 14-4-2 record against various club and
varsity teams throughout New England, such as
UMass-Amherst, Boston Univ, Holy Cross, Mt. Holyoke,
URI, UConn, and UMass-Lowell.

Our season begins in October and continues through
March. Practices are held 2-3 regular times each
week, possibly during regular business hours,
at the MIT ice rink in Cambridge, MA. The coaches will
be offered an honorarium in return for their services
($750 for head coach, $500 for assistants). The ideal
coach would lead every practice and game with an
organized but relaxed approach. The assistant coach
may lead practices geared towards more novice players.

Interested parties should contact the captains of
the MIT Women's Ice Hockey Club Team:

Subject: Admin (very important!) New mailing list system beta test!

I apologize in advance if you get this multiple times -- this is
being sent to all mailing lists on plaidworks except the Online Drive
list.

I am quite thrilled to finally announce the availability of our new
mailing list server for beta test. This is a major milestone in a
project that has occupied the last few months here in Plaidworks
Central.

The current system we use for plaidworks and the mailing lists is
1996 technology. Since that time, there have been huge changes in the
Internet, in e-mail capabiities and technologies, and in computer
hardware and software systems. It's time (actually, long overdue)
that we catch up with the universe and upgrade the systems.

We are, pretty literally, throwing out the old system and replacing
it. Our new system has new hardware (A Macintosh G3/350 replacing our
discontinued Apple Network Server), a new Operating system (YellowDog
Linux, a PowerPC-based version of Red Hat, replacing AIX), and
built-from-scratch mailing list system built around the Mailman
mailing list manager (replacing Majordomo). When we bring the new
system into production, we'll literally be turning off the old
machine, renaming the new one plaidworks.com, and sending the old one
out to pasture.

The key pieces of the system are now ready for testing, which is
where all of you come in. I'd like to ask everyone to check out the
new system, run it through its paces, and let me know what you think
- -- what you like, what you don't, and what's broken (especially the
latter two). Now is the time to work out the glitches and clean up
the rough edges before we have to live with them.

You can access the new system via the URL
. I've created the first pieces of the
new mailing list directory (replacing www.lists.plaidworks.com), and
created a test list (named, amazingly, "test", that I'd like people
to subscribe to, try out the options on, post messages to, check out
the archives, and all the normal things you might do as a user.

If you like how things work, let me know. If you don't, please tell
me, and explain why. If you find things confusing, or if you think
something needs to be documented, or a message changed -- let me
know. I've specifically NOT written any documentation for the system
yet, to see where people get lost or confused (the standard
documentation for mailman exists, I just haven't written
site-specific information, or any supplemental stuff we'll need to
fix weaknesses in the standard documentation). I also don't (yet)
have the archives of existing messages working, or the search engine.
Those I hope to make available RSN, but if we go live without them,
it won't kill us.

Archives of the messages from the new system exist, and I'm really
curious whether this new archiving system works for you, and if not,
why not. One big question in my mind is whether it's fine as is, or
whether I need to look at replacing it with a different archiving
system.

Here's a quick list of some of the highlights this new system gives us:

o the lists now support MIME. (We're still trying to decide just how
far to take this. Right now, the lists are 100% mime-transparent, so
that anything you send appears on the other end; this compares to
majordomo, which is MIME unaware and was turning into a big problem
as people moved to browsers that did styled text and HTML. My
preference is to limit MIME capabilities to "non-active" content to
avoid the issues of viruses and the like, but that's still being
developed. And yes, we'll be limiting the size of postings still,s o
you won't have someone posting 2Meg sound files... The archives are
still weak in supporting MIME text)

o digests are now a mode to a subscription: no more "unsubscribe from
list this, subscribe to that list" if you want to change to digest.

o we support MIME digests as well as plain text digests.

o NOMAIL support, so you can go on vacation and not have to
unsubscribe from everything and lose your preferences settings.

o administration is WWW oriented (but you can still subscribe via
email, but you'll find youself limited if you don't have WWW access
for some things. On the other hand, the reality is if you don't have
WWW access, you're limited on all of the internet... you can't play
LPs in a CD player...)

There are a lot of administrative improvements as well, and the
system is a lot more flexible and configurable (and will get more so
as mailman 2.0 development continues. We're running beta 3-, but it's
been quite stable)

Our current plan is to test the new system for about two weeks,
finish up the documentation and clean up problems and loose ends,
hopefully finish the archives and the search engine, and be ready to
move to the new server in the latter part of June. We definitely
won't make the change until after the Stanley Cup is handed out and
the Dallas folks have their celebration (or gripe session, if it
comes to that), but if I can do this around the 24th, I'll be
thrilled. More likely, around the 30th.

What that means is if you have feedback, get it to me quickly. We're
going to move to the new server as soon as I'm sure it's ready to go
and stable and the last few items I need to do are done. It's a LOT
easier to fix things BEFORE I move all of the subscriptions. And --
if you wait until after we switch to complain about something, it's
your problem, not mine (grin). you ahve your chance to fix things
before we commit to the new system, afterwards is too late. So get
your two cents in now.

I really think this new server is going to be a great improvemnt.
That doens't mean it's not flawless, that there won't be some
problems and glitches, and that you won't even notice the difference.
but we've put a lot of work into building a new, much improved system
and designed it to be as painless to switch to as possible for you
(and for us!). We hope you like it, too.

And this is the first phase in a complete re-do of everything we've
been doing here at Plaidworks -- expect to see lots of new features
and stuff showing up between now and opening night in October. but
more on that when we get closer to it and have things to show off --
but there are lots of plans in place, and all of them depend on us
getting this new server and the new mailing list system running
first... but I really think you'll like what we're planning on doing.

Let us know what you think. and go test the thing and help us make it
even better, because we're going to have to live on it soon!

chuq (who, to be honest, thought he'd be sending this note in December...)

Subject: Give Hockey A Try

The Northern California Women's Hockey League (NCWHL) is once again
sponsoring its popular "Give Hockey A Try Day" where women are encouraged to
come out and try the fun sport of ice hockey. Women need no previous
experience and will be able to register for the league's beginner division
after the session if they so choose. Hockey skates are required and are
available at the rink. Women currently playing in the NCWHL will provide
all other equipment, including helmets, and also plenty of guidance and
encouragement. The cost for the session will be $12. Reservations are
strongly advised in order to guarantee a place.

The session will be held on Sunday, June 25th at 6:00 p.m. at the Belmont
Iceland. Participants will be on the ice from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. but are
asked to arrive no later 5:30 p.m. for registration and orientation.
Belmont Iceland (650-592-0532) is at 815 Old County Road in Belmont, just
north of Ralston Avenue. Take US-101 on the S.F. Peninsula to the Ralston
Avenue exit in Belmont. Go west about 1/2 mile to Old County Road, just
before the railroad tracks. Turn right at the Wendy's and go north on Old
County Road about two blocks. The rink is on the right.

For more information or to reserve a spot please call: 415-437-1927 or
e-mail Betsy Risch at email@hidden. Or check out our website at
www.ncwhl.com.

The NCWHL is a recreational women's ice hockey league, which plays in the
San Francisco Bay Area. It has 4 divisions (beginner/recreational,
intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced) and is currently recruiting
at all levels for the Winter 2000-2001 season.
