Subject: Wisconsin women's hockey release

THIS WEEK: The Badgers (18-10-2, 15-6-1 WCHA), who played in the WCHA¢s first game on Oct. 8, will play in the conference¢s last contest of the season when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., this weekend. Wisconsin will face No. 3 Minnesota (26-5-1, 19-2-1 WCHA) on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26-27, at 2:05 p.m.. The game will feature the Badgers, owners of an eight-game winning streak which is currently division I¢s longest, and the Gophers, who currently hold the nation¢s longest unbeaten string of 17 games.
The Badger men will also be in Minneapolis to face the Gophers on Feb. 25-26, where they will look to clinch their first WCHA title since 1990.

ON THE RADIO: On Saturday, Feb. 26, at 2:05 p.m., the Badgers¢ contest with Minnesota can be heard on WIBA-AM 1310.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH: Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) had the best weekend of the season for the Badgers with a four goal and four assist weekend against MSU, Mankato. The defenseman had a power-play goal and three assists, and was plus-2 in Friday¢s 6-2 win. She came back Saturday with her second career hat trick and an assist in a 6-1 win. One of her goals was a game-winner, one was a power-play goal and the third was a her first career short-handed goal. Paulsen had five power-play points on the weekend with two goals and three assists and now ranks third in the nation with six goals and 13 assists for 19 power-play points. Paulsen was named the WCHA Player of the Week for her performance.
The freshman now leads the conference and the nation in defense scoring and shares the team lead with 14 goals and 25 assists for 39 points.

THE BEST DEFENSE IS A GOOD OFFENSE: On Feb. 12, Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) became the first netminder in WCHA history to record an assist. The freshman took the puck near the goal line on the side boards and hit Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) with a pass at the MSU, Mankato blue line. Kegley skated the puck into the offensive zone and found the net for the power-play goal at 15:46 of the third period.
MacMillan is about as hot as a goaltender can be with wins in her last 11 games. She is unbeaten in her last 12 games and has not allowed more than two goals in any game over that stretch. She ranks sixth in the nation with a .781 winning percentage (12-3-1), and ranks fourth in the WCHA in both goals against average (2.54) and save percentage (.914).

HAT TRICK OF HAT TRICKS: Kelly Kegley scored four more goals against MSU, Mankato to extended her goal-scoring string to eight games. She has 15 goals during the streak and leads the team with 23 goals in 24 games. Kegley is averaging better than a goal per game in WCHA action with 21 in 18 games (1.17). Kegley had her third hat trick of the season against MSU, Mankato on Friday and totaled six point over the weekend (4-2=6).
Kegley ranks fifth in the WCHA in goal scoring and ranks 14th in the country. The frosh has 35 total points to rank third on the team, but ranks first on the team with an average of 1.46 points per game.

MICHELLE SHOCKED: Sophomore Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) has points in 10-straight games with nine goals and 10 assists over that span. The streak is the longest of the season for the Badgers and dates back to Nov. 27 against Princeton.

ONE FOR YOU, ONE FOR ME: The Badgers have five players averaging at least a point per game. Kelly Kegley leads the team with 35 points in 24 games (1.46 points per game). Sis Paulsen ranks second with 39 points in 27 games (1.44). Kendra Antony, with 39 points in 30 games (1.30), Michelle Sikich, with 31 points in 24 games (1.29), and Kerry Weiland, with 30 points in 28 games (1.07), complete the quintet.

ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE: After 30 games of the Wisconsin women¢s hockey inaugural season, six players can say they have played in every game the Badgers have ever played. Kendra Antony, Melanie Schmitt, Bridget Buchholz, Liz Jankowski, Julia Ortenzio and Gretchen Anderson make up the iron group.

THE GOPHERS: Ranked No. 3 in the country and in second place in the WCHA, Minnesota has not lost a regular season contest since Dec. 4. The Gophers swept St. Cloud State by scores of 5-0 and 5-2 last weekend.
The Gophers are led by the nation¢s leading goal scorer on offense. Junior Nadine Muzerall has 41 goals and 25 assists for 66 points. Muzerall scored a goal in 16 consecutive games before being held scoreless this past Saturday against St. Cloud State. She still holds a 17-game point scoring streak, however, with 31 goals and 14 assists over the stretch. Junior Ambria Thomas (24g, 30a), sophomore Laura Slominski (20g, 32a) and frosh Ronda Curtin (25g, 25a) all have over 50 points for the high-powered Gopher attack. As a team, the U of M has outscored its opponents, 169-58.
The defense of the Gophers has been patch-work because of various injuries. Winny Brodt, Minnesota¢s candidate for the Patty Kazmaier Award, has been out since mid-January. Others injuries have forced the Gophers to shake up their line-up with players such as Thomas moving to the blue line for stretches.
The player shortage has seemed to have little effect on Minnesota, whose goaltending tandem of Erica Killewald and Crystal Nicholas have kept the puck out of the net. Killewald is 13-5-1 with a 1.91 goals against average and .922 save percentage, while Nicholas is a perfect 13-0-0 with a 1.64 goals against and .913 save percentage.
Laura Halldorson is the head coach and sports a 76-16-8 mark for the Gophers. She is 135-91-17 in 10 years as a college coach with Minnesota and Colby College.
The Gophers swept the Badgers in the teams¢ first meetings on Nov. 19-20. The Gophers won the first, 7-4, before blanking Wisconsin, 5-0 in the second contest. The Badgers held leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 at points before the half-way point of the first game, but fell behind early in the third period and never fully recovered. Kendra Antony had a goal and three assists in the game for the Badgers. Ambria Thomas had a hat trick and an assist in the game for the Gophers. In the second game, Winny Brodt had a goal and three assists, and Nadine Muzerall scored twice and had an assist as Minnesota blanked the Badgers. Crystal Nicholas made 13 saves for the shutout. Jackie MacMillan started and lost both games in goal for the Badgers. The games are the last the freshman has dropped.

THE WCHA TOURNAMENT: Wisconsin, along with the rest of the WCHA, will gather in Bloomington, Minn., on March 2-4, for the inaugural WCHA Tournament. All seven conference members will take part in the event at the Bloomington Ice Gardens.
The regular-season conference champion receives a first-round bye on Thursday, March 2, while seed 2 faces seed 7, seed 3 (Wisconsin) faces seed 6, and seeds 4 and 5 face off to advance to the semifinals on Friday. On Saturday, the third-place game takes place at 3:30 p.m., with the championship game at 7:00 p.m.

Subject: Pre-game talks

I'm interested to know how other teams approach game day - for coached
teams, how long a pre-game talk does the coach give, and what topics does
the coach cover? What about intermission talks, and post game talks?

All input is appreciated.
Thanks.
