I'm new to the list. But I have a question that I hope
someone can answer.

Has anyone heard about the National Women's Hockey
League? With nine teams presently in Canada (Ontario
and Quebec), it is set to expand to the rest of Canada
(Vancouver; Calgary; Edmonton) and the U.S. (possibly
Detroit; Boston; Portland, OR).

What are your thoughts on the NWHL?

GOPHERS EXTENDED UNBEATEN STREAK TO 16 GAMES WITH WIN OVER HUSKIES

Minnesota (25-5-1, 18-2-1 WCHA) scored three times in the final period and
extended its unbeaten streak to 16 games with a 5-0 win over St. Cloud State
(11-17-2, 5-14-2).

The Gophers, despite a 24-8 advantage in shots on goal, could only manage
two goals through the first two periods. Nadine Muzerall scored the game's
first goal, extending her goal-scoring streak to 16 games, when she slipped
the puck through the legs of Husky goalie Laura Gieselman five minutes, 36
seconds into the opening period.

Minnesota would not score again until 10.5 seconds remained in the second
period. Emily Buchholz stole the puck in the neutral zone, skated into the
St. Cloud State zone and gave the puck to Ambria Thomas on the left side and
she ripped a shot high to Gieselman's stick side.

The St. Cloud State goalie kept her team in the game but the Gophers beat
her three times in the final 20 minutes, including a power-play goal by
Ronda Curtin, which was sandwiched between goals by Kelly Olson and Laura
Slominski.

Gieselman finished the game with 37 saves while Erica Killewald had 10 saves
for Minnesota, recording her fifth shutout of the season.

The two teams meet again Saturday at 3:05 p.m. at the National Hockey Center
in St. Cloud.

Well, it's pretty early in the morning and I don't mean to ramble...I'm
sure most of us on this list are very happy to see a professional league
beginning to form. I do wonder though, if it will follow the WNBA,
with the teams basically run by NBA teams. Or is this something else,
where we will have many teams in some areas and no NHL partnership? I
can imagine that if the league is succesful the NHL will get involved
and are probably waiting to see what happens. I believe I read a quote
from Gary Betman a while back that the NHL would like to be involved in
women's hockey after the Olympics in 2002. So I guess that does mean
major changes could happen to this league at that time? It does seem
odd there would be expansion in Vancouver before Alberta and the US?

I volunteered at the Pacific Rim here in Vancouver in 1996 and the final
between the US and Canada was sold out. We did have very good
attendance a couple of years ago at the TSN challenge. There are lots
of women that play hockey here, but time will tell who will support a
womens team, other then the National team in this area. Many of the
strong players that have played in the Vancouver area have had to leave
here to get the best coaching and training. Some know play in Calgary
and some are in US college hockey. Are they interested in playing for
this team?

Unless they manage to get Hayley Wickenheiser and/or some others they
will have many long nights. What would really be nice is when we get
to see a draft and the league becomes more even. They will need money
to pay the players to accomplish this, which in turn will create more
interest and on it goes. I imagine some strong players may even turn
down the opportunity to play on a team out West if it means long road
trips. Not that many people have such flexible jobs that they can
afford this without being paid.
I guess we will have to see what happens. I'd much rather see the
Griffins then the Canucks and we'll probably see them in the playoffs
sooner as well! Hopefully this league has it's long range plans really
well thought out.

Ok, now I may be totally wrong in this, but when I first read about the
league, I got the understanding that it wasn't a professional league because
they were not getting paid for playing. Any truth to this?

Support the only varsity hockey program in the state of Michigan!

Next Sunday, 2/27, at 1pm Wayne State is playing Ohio State. They play
out
of the State Fairgrounds rink. They are having a Skate With the Lady
Warriors
program right after the game. And, although "tickets at door -$4 ea",
"Hockey players with team jerseys are admitted FREE!" We're assuming
that
means YOUR team jersey. parking is $5 (so you're not surprised).

Welcome to the list, Spiros! I've been enjoying your stories on the Canoe
site. This list has always included some fans of the NWHL and its
predecessor the Central Ontario WHL. It's great to see more newspaper (and
web!) coverage of that league the last couple of seasons. (I remember
seeing scores and standings in the Globe and Mail once a week in the
1974-75 season, but then almost nothing for almost 25 years.)

From an outsider's point of view, one of the biggest problems with this
league over the years seems to have been the difficulty of making new teams
competitive, especially from centres a little farther from Toronto.
Peterborough, Hamilton, and London have all entered teams in the COWHL
which never did get good enough to be competitive with the Aeros,
Mississauga, etc. The merger of the Quebec and Ontario leagues looks like
a successful idea, but I think it's too early to tell whether the Ottawa
and Durham teams will be long-term threats.

>What are your thoughts on the NWHL?

Looks good so far. I think that Canadian national team players are still
(on average) older than their American opponents, and a big reason for that
is our strong club-team programs here allowing elite players to keep
developing into their 30's. Questions on the proposed expansion include:

Who is going to pay for the travel? Will the expense be divided evenly
among the teams? Is there any chance that the planned budget depends on
optimistic estimates of paid admission?

Are any new measures being considered to "balance" team strength in order
to support all teams?

Will this league kill the existing National Championships? I don't think
the current format is the greatest anyway, because I think that Ontario's
custom of sending the AAA provincial-champion team to Nationals is part of
the reason why it's hard to keep competitive balance in the league. But
your story last week said that perhaps NWHL players would stop playing in
Ontario Provincials and Esso Nationals. This seems unfortunate. Would
Nationals continue to develop in public interest and media coverage if none
of the "stars" of international play were playing? Would this just be one
more way a would-be star from Saskatchewan or New Brunswick is
disadvantaged if she doesn't move to Toronto, Calgary or now Vancouver? I
worry about that.

I'm glad to have you on the list, Spiro. (And now that you're here, I can
say what I've thought for a long time, that you have a great surname for a
hockey writer!)

Louise

Right now, they are not getting paid to play. So
calling it a professional league is a bit of a
stretch. It may take a few years until the players get
paid to play.
