Subject: 2001 World Championships

Based on Lynn's post, here's a new subject to discuss. This year (and 2001 from what it seems) the Worlds will coincide with the USA Hockey Nationals. This means that any national team players, whether they be American, Canadian, Russian, or whatever, who play on USA Hockey teams during the year will not get to play in USA Hockey Nationals with their teams.
Obviously, Worlds takes precedence for them.

My question is, why would USA Hockey schedule the Nationals on the same weekend as the Worlds? Depending on how many national team players a specific team has, that could really change the caliber of that team at Nationals. This year, I'm sure the Nationals will be won and lost because of this issue.

I'm not sure how I stand on this one, myself, because my team is in the "B" division nationally, but I do feel sorry for those teams who win their state or regional tournament with all of their players present, only to go on to Nationals without their stars!

THIS WEEK: The Badgers (18-10-2, 15-6-1 WCHA) take a week off before their last series of the season. Wisconsin will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to face second-place Minnesota on Feb. 26-27 at 2:05 p.m., to close out the regular season.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH: Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) had the best weekend of the season for the Badgers with a four goal and four assist weekend against MSU, Mankato. The defenseman has a power-play goal and three assists, and was plus-2 in Friday's 6-2 win. She came back Saturday with her second career hat trick and an assist in a 6-1 win. One of her goals was a game-winner, one was a power-play goal and the third was a her first career short-handed goal. Paulsen had five power-play points on the weekend with two goals and three assists and now ranks third in the nation with six goals and 13 assists for 19 power-play points.
The freshman now leads the conference and the nation in defense scoring and shares the team lead with 14 goals and 25 assists for 39 points.

THE BEST DEFENSE IS A GOOD OFFENSE: On Feb. 12, Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) became the first netminder in WCHA history to record an assist. The freshman took the puck near the goal line on the side boards and hit Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) with a pass at the MSU, Mankato blue line. Kegley skated the puck into the offensive zone and found the net for the power-play goal at 15:46 of the third period.
MacMillan is about as hot as a goaltender can be with wins in her last 11 games. She is unbeaten in her last 12 games and has not allowed more than two goals in any game over that stretch. She ranks fifth in the nation with a .781 winning percentage (12-3-1), and ranks fourth in the WCHA in both goals against average (2.54) and save percentage (.914).

HAT TRICK OF HAT TRICKS: Kelly Kegley scored four more goals this past weekend to extended her goal-scoring string to eight games. She has 15 goals during the streak and now leads the team with 23 goals in 24 games. Kegley is averaging better than a goal per game in WCHA action with 21 in 18 games (1.17). Kegley had her third hat trick of the season against MSU, Mankato on Friday and totaled six point over the weekend (4-2=6).
Kegley ranks fourth in the WCHA in goal scoring and ranks ninth in the country. The frosh has 35 total points to rank third on the team, but ranks first on the team with an average of 1.46 points per game.

MICHELLE SHOCKED: Sophomore Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) has now scored in 10-straight games after collecting two goals and two assists against MSU, Mankato this past weekend. Sikich scored two goals, including her fifth game-winner of the season on Friday, before adding two assists Saturday. The streak is the longest of the season for the Badgers and dates back to Nov. 27 against Princeton.

THE WCHA TOURNAMENT: Wisconsin, along with the rest of the WCHA, will gather in Bloomington, Minn., on March 2-4, for the inaugural WCHA Tournament. All seven conference members will take part in the event at the Bloomington Ice Gardens.
The regular-season conference champion receives a first-round bye on Thursday, March 2, while seed 2 faces seed 7, seed 3 faces seed 6, and seeds 4 and 5 face off to advance to the semifinals on Friday. On Saturday, the third-place game takes place at 3:30 p.m., with the championship game at 7:00 p.m.
The winner of the tournament gets an automatic berth to the American Women's College Hockey Alliance Championship, which currently serves as the national championship for women's hockey. Four teams qualify for the national tournament including the WCHA Tourney champion, ECAC regular season and tourney champions, and one at-large qualifier.

ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE: After 30 games of the Wisconsin women's hockey inaugural season, six players can say they have played in every game the Badgers have ever played. Kendra Antony, Melanie Schmitt, Bridget Buchholz, Liz Jankowski, Julia Ortenzio and Gretchen Anderson make up the iron group.

ONE FOR YOU, ONE FOR ME: The Badgers have five players averaging at least a point per game. Kelly Kegley leads the team with 35 points in 24 games (1.46 points per game). Sis Paulsen ranks second with 39 points in 27 games (1.44). Kendra Antony, with 39 points in 30 games (1.30), Michelle Sikich, with 31 points in 24 games (1.29), and Kerry Weiland, with 30 points in 28 games (1.07), complete the quintet.

SIGNINGS: The Badgers announced the signing of their first three recruits for the class of 2004 on Nov. 18. Defender Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Penn.), forward Stephanie Millar (Hudson, Wis.) and forward Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ontario) signed national letters of intent last week and will attend Wisconsin starting the fall semester of 2000.

HEAD COACH JULIE SASNER: Head coach Julie Sasner (Harvard, 1988) is in her first year with the Badgers after spending six years at the helm of Cornell. The Badgers first coach sports a 18-10-2 record behind the bench for Wisconsin, and is 71-71-8 lifetime. She led Big Red to a 53-61-6 mark and the 1995-96 team to its first Ivy League title since 1990 with an 8-1-1 record. She also directed Cornell to a 15-8-3 record in 1997-98 and a 16-7-2 mark during the 1995-96 season. She was named the 1995 Coach of the Year by the American Women's Hockey Association.
A member of the first U.S. Women's National Team in 1990, she has since helped coach the team at the 1999 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship. She was also the head coach for the U.S. Women's Select Team that competed in the Three Nations Cup held in Finland in December of 1998. She earned her first U.S. head coaching position, leading the U.S. Women's National Team to a silver medal at the Pacific Women's Hockey Championship in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1996.
